Elon University golfer reflects on winning amateur tournament

Elon University golfer and Madrid native Juan Callejo Ropero felt nervous as he played the final day of last weekend’s Madrid Amateur Men’s Championship. Winless since 2019, Callejo Ropero made a birdie on the final hole securing a two-shot victory in his home tournament.

Elon University student-athletes gain transferable skills through internships

Elon University linebacker CJ Ford is spending his summer juggling football, a personal life and an internship. Each morning, he wakes up at 5 a.m. for practice before heading to Greensboro for his internship with the United States Marshal Service. On some days, he has practice again when the work day concludes.

Students present research upon completion of SURE program

The 45 students in the SURE program have worked full time throughout the summer with faculty research mentors on programs of interest. Each student received a $3000 stipend, and the program culminated in a poster session July 20, giving students the opportunity to showcase their research.

Town of Elon police officer will stay on force after pleading guilty in toddler’s accidental shooting

Town of Elon police officer Orlando Maynard pleaded guilty in the accidental shooting death of his three-year-old son on Friday, 13 months after the child found Maynard’s unsecured handgun. Elon Police Chief Kelly Blackwelder said in a statement the police department will continue to employ Maynard.

Elon Watches: Obi-Wan Kenobi

The show follows Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor, as he eludes the Empire after the events of the prequel trilogy. Princess Leia, played by Vivien Lyra Blair, is kidnapped, and Kenobi must come out of hiding to rescue her and bring her back to Alderaan. All the while, Kenobi is hunted by the Second Sister, played by Moses Ingram, and Darth Vader, played by Hayden Christensen.

Elon Town Council delays vote on Parc Northwest development

Elon Town Council voted to continue the conversation regarding the rezoning request made by GreenHawk Development, a firm which plans to create a mixed use development, Parc Northwest, in Elon. This decision came during the council’s regular meeting July 12, after a month that included a neighborhood meeting, technical review committee meeting and planning board meeting, as well as a public hearing where Mayor Emily Sharpe deemed this rezoning request one of the most contentious rezoning discussions she’s been a part of.

Carolina Panthers waive former Elon quarterback Davis Cheek

Just two weeks before the beginning of the team’s training camp, the Carolina Panthers have waived former Elon University quarterback Davis Cheek. The move comes six days after the Panthers acquired quarterback Baker Mayfield, the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, from the Cleveland Browns via trade.

Biden signs executive order to protect access to abortion

President Joe Biden signed an executive order today in an attempt to protect access to reproductive health care services. The executive order outlines actions intended to lessen potential penalties that those seeking an abortion could face after the ruling, as well as protect access to abortion medication by mail.

Beth Kennett, first vice chair of Alamance County Democratic Party opened the July 7 meeting with a call to action. The general election is Nov. 8 and Kennett said the party has a lot of work to do before then and believes party members must work together in order to get the candidates they want into office.

Gov. Cooper signs executive order to protect abortion access in NC

Gov. Roy Cooper signed an executive order July 6 that will protect reproductive freedom and abortion access in North Carolina. The order comes after the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and the federal constitutional right to abortion June 24.

2022-23 academic year marks 30 years of common reading at Elon University

For the 30th year in a row, Elon University will continue its common reading program and has selected, “Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World—and Why Things Are Better Than You Think” by Hans Rosling for the 2022-23 academic year. A committee composed of faculty, staff and students chose the book as one that represents the core values of the university for freshmen students.
