Entering the ninth inning against the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks, the Elon University baseball team trailed 1-0. However, a late rally propelled Elon to a 2-1 win, ending a three-game losing streak.
With the win, Elon advances to play top seeded College of Charleston tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the semifinals. Charleston defeated Hofstra University 4-0 in its quarterfinal match and beat Elon 5-2 on March 15 in Charleston.
The fourth place finish for Elon is one spot better than the team’s finish at this tournament last season, which was also played at the Dataw Island Club-Cotton Dike Course.
The seeds for the tournament will be revealed later this week. Elon will play its quarterfinal match on Friday at either 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. The semifinal matches will take place on Saturday and the championship match will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
Elon’s tee times for tomorrow’s final round begin at 9:12 a.m. Callejo Ropero will be the first Elon player to tee off and Risner will be the last at 10 a.m.
Sophomore forward Michael Graham announced on Instagram that he will transfer to play basketball at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles next year. Loyola Marymount is a member of the West Coast Conference and went 11-18 last season.
Elon was also in fifth place following the first round of last year’s tournament, which was also played at the Dataw Island Golf Course. Elon’s tee times in the second round will begin at 9:42 a.m. tomorrow.
Elon travels for a three-game series against the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks next weekend with the first game scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
With the loss, Elon’s season is over, and the team finishes with a record of 15-9.

Elon faces Charleston two more times this weekend. Elon is in need of a turnaround, as the team is currently second to last in the Colonial Athletic Association, with a conference record of 3-7. Only the top four teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the CAA Tournament in May, which will be contested at Latham Park.
Elon will face the top seeded William & Mary Tribe in the semifinals at 11 a.m. tomorrow. William & Mary defeated Elon 7-0 on Feb. 6 in a match played indoors in Williamsburg, Virginia. Leonard said the Tribe are a tough matchup, but believes Elon has a better chance of beating William & Mary on outdoor courts than indoors.
The tournament will be held April 24 through 26. Each day, 18 holes will be played at the Dataw Island Club course.
While head coach Kathy Bocock serves as a daily role model for Elon University softball players, she became more inspiring to the team when she hit 500 wins as a softball coach during their victory against College of Charleston on April 9. Reaching that 500th win has now placed her as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Elon softball.
The Phoenix plays host to the College of Charleston this weekend for three games. Charleston leads the Colonial Athletic Association standings and has won six of its last seven games.
Senior guard Brie Perpignan, along with all other NCAA athletes who had their seasons impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, was granted an extra year of athletic eligibility, meaning she will be able to play one season at Clemson.
