Election Board officials weigh in on early, in-person voting

With Election Day quickly approaching and early voting starting last week, Elon University students are gearing up to cast their ballots on or before Nov. 3. 28 million Americans already have voted early. In Alamance County over 21,000 people have voted early according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

Possible changes made to Winter Term 2021 due to COVID-19

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused multiple changes to Elon University’s academic calendar, and Winter Term has not been immune to these changes. With Winter Term abroad programs canceled, a new "Maymester" is planned for the summer.

North Carolina to extend Phase 3 due to a rise in COVID-19 cases

North Carolina will stay paused in Phase 3 for the next three weeks because of a rise in COVID-19 cases, Gov. Roy Cooper announced in a press briefing today. Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Mandy Cohen said the main causes of this increase have been social and religious gatherings.

Elon STEM students highlight Black contributions to the field

In light of the racial tensions and disparities occurring in the United States, Elon students from the physics, biology, chemistry, exercise science and the engineering clubs started the STEM for Black Lives Matter club. The new club emerged on campus in July to promote diversity and advocate against racial disparities in the STEM communities.

Roundtable on pro-Trump caravan makes reccomendations to President Connie Book

The roundtable on the Trump caravan gave its recommendations to Elon University President Connie Book on Oct. 19. The list included 16 different recommendations of action that could be taken to boost campus safety. The group was formed following the pro-Trump caravan, which traveled through campus, and was made up of students, staff and faculty appointed by Book.

Sixth annual Alamance Pride goes virtual

Every October since 2015, Alamance Pride, a nonprofit that serves the LGBTQIA community, has held an annual Pride festival in downtown Burlington, but this year’s sixth annual event was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Quarantine's impact on mental health

Students who test positive for COVID-19 or are in close contact with a positive case are required to quarantine. These students are in isolation to contain the spread of the virus. But as a result of their solitude, their mental health can face negative effects.

3 new coronavirus clusters identified at Elon University

Three additional coronavirus clusters have been identified at Elon University. Two of the clusters are located in freshman dorms, while another was identified in a sorority. According to Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee, the clusters are due to social gatherings.

Thom Tillis and Cal Cunningham battle for North Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat

With 35 of the 100 U.S. Senate seats up for election in 2020, Democrats are looking to unseat incumbent North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis with their candidate Cal Cunningham. Tillis, 60, is seeking his second term in office after defeating then Democrat incumbent Kay Hagan in the 2014 elections.Cunningham, 47, is a former state senator and retired military officer. Throughout his career Cunningham has worked at law firms.

North Carolina residents still concerned about COVID-19, according to new Elon Poll survey

Elon University Poll released findings from a new survey that surveyed North Carolina residents on the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.This is the first of two issue-based surveys that will be conducted by Elon Poll in partnership with The Raleigh News & Observer, The Charlotte Observer and The Durham Herald Sun before the Nov. 3 general election.

Elon student honored for song about social justice

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Foundation awarded Elon junior Eliza Spear the 2020 Jay Gorney Award along with co-writers Lindsay Gitter and Rachael Williams for their song “If I Don’t Try.” The award is given to a songwriting team or songwriter, who is not affiliated with a label, for their original work and is handed out based on the song’s social implications, according to the ASCAP Foundation.

SGA passes resolution supporting Black Lives Matter

Elon University’s Student Government Association passed Senate Resolution 20, which expresses support for the Black Lives Matter movement and adopts eight articles to support marginalized groups on campus.The articles include increasing diversity within SGA, the student body, Elon’s faculty and the Board of Trustees. The resolution also affirms the SGA’s commitment to anti-racism.

East Haggard to be closed for Homecoming Weekend

East Haggard Avenue will be closed this weekend from noon on Saturday, Oct. 17 through noon on Sunday, Oct. 18 for Homecoming Weekend, according to a press release from the town of Elon. This decision comes after Elon University submitted a revised proposal to the town of Elon asking the town to close Haggard for Homecoming as well as election week.

COVID-19 cluster linked to freshman dorm

Elon University reported 17 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. In an email to students, faculty and staff, chair of the Ready & Resilient Committee Jeff Stein said the spike in cases is related to a freshman residence hall. The Alamance County Health Department is reporting the cases as a cluster at East Neighborhood Building A residence hall. The outbreak has been traced to the first floor.

Voters face long lines at the polls for early voting

Today is the first day of early voting in North Carolina. Hundreds of voters have been lining up at Holly Hill Mall,the closest early voting location to Elon University of the five different locations in Alamance County. Voters began lining up around the building before 8 a.m. to get to the polling place within the mall.

Elon students car, belongings reported stolen at off campus residence

An Elon University student’s car and other possessions including a wallet and a laptop were reported stolen from an off campus house on Woodale Drive, overnight, according to the student.
