The defense prevented scoring opportunities for Hoftsra and allowed the offense to lift Elon to the finals. The Phoenix captured victory on the back of goalkeeping from its freshman goalie McKenna Dalfonso.
In just the first half, Elon women’s lacrosse struggled to catch up to lower ranked Virginia Tech, ending the first half 7-3. The second half the Phoenix only scored two goals and ultimately lost 10-5. On an overcast evening, the Phoenix fell to 3-8 Virginia Tech; the mood after the game was filled with frustration on the sidelines.
Elon head baseball coach Mike Kennedy described their season thus far as “inconsistent.”Currently, the team has a 7-13 record overall and is 1-2 in conference play. The team lost on March 26 to then No. 8 East Carolina 15-0. The Phoenix then returned to play against the Pirates the next day, beating them 2-1— it was Elon’s first win against at top 10 ranked team since 2013.
Since Week 3, Elon has been rotating back and forth at quarterback between freshman JR Martin and redshirt freshman Justin Allen. Martin has appeared in four games for Elon, recording a team-high 396 passing yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Allen, meanwhile, has recorded 290 passing yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in three games played.
In the last 50 years, the number of female athletes in college sports dramatically increased. However, women coaches are now more underrepresented in women’s college sports. Currently at Elon, approximately 26% of non-volunteer coaches are women 一 double counting for coaches who are on staff with multiple teams. Female collegiate coaches have not always been underrepresented in women’s sports. The trend started when Title IX 一 a law, which prohibits federally funded institutions from discriminating on the basis of sex 一 was enacted in 1972 and greatly increased representation of female athletes.
Growing up, many children are warned not to play with fire. But Elon University junior Jill Ford did just the opposite. Ford has a position in Elon’s “Fire of the Carolinas” marching band dancing with batons as the school’s feature twirler. Throughout her performances Ford can be seen simultaneously twirling up to three — sometimes flaming — batons.
Elon University’s football game against William & Mary on April 3 has been postponed due to “COVID-19 related protocols,” according to a press release from the Colonial Athletic Association. In a previous interview with Elon News Network, CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said schools would be able to make their own decisions regarding opting out of game play.
Apple Ngamwong has come a long way to play golf at Elon University — literally. The freshman, ranked third in the Colonial Athletic Association conference in women’s golf, is doing it all 9,000 miles away from home. Ngamwong, a Bangkok, Thailand native, said despite her success, it’s still hard to be far away from her home country.
Elon women’s lacrosse has won five games straight, defeating teams both in and out of their conference such as James Madison University, Furman University and Radford University. Despite their 5-0 record, head coach Josh Hexter said the record does not matter when it comes to preparing to compete.
Women Influencers in Sport, or WINS, is teaching Elon’s young women confidence and career skills necessary to become successful in the sports industry. Their primary focus is educating young women about what it is like to go into the male-dominated sports industry while empowering them to use their voice to its fullest potential.
Elon University’s football team (1-3) suffered its third straight loss of the spring season against the University of Richmond (2-0) on Saturday, ending with a final score of 38-14. A low time of possession and miscues on offense were huge factors that affected the Phoenix.
Elon women’s basketball will not be advancing in the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association championship. The no. 6 Phoenix lost to the no. 3 Dragons 65 - 59 in the quarterfinals. The Phoenix had the opportunity to host the event at Schar Center for the second year in a row after the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was the Phoenix’s first time ever advancing to the CAA championship game and the first time a no. 8 seed has advanced to the final.
