ELON WATCHES: lion cubs, sharks and a family secret

Turner Theatre is a 220-seat auditorium located in Elon University’s School of Communications. Since 2016, the theater has shown movies and documentaries for students and community members free of charge. While attendees are encouraged to bring their own food, candy and popcorn are usually provided. Here is what is playing this week:

Thinking like a lawyer: Preet Bharara addresses Elon Law

Bharara’s talk, part of the Distinguished Leadership Lecture Series hosted at the Carolina Theatre in Greensboro, centered around his legal experience, and how it informs his day-to-day life.

The Sierra Student Coalition at Elon University works to forge a better relationship between people and the environment. The Sierra Student Coalition is part of the larger non-profit environmental organization, Sierra Club, which has operated in the U.S. since 1892.

Philosollamas club discusses bringing train stop to Elon

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Lauren Guilmette said the decision to bring a train stop to Elon will depend on whether or not students care. However, members of the Philosollamas club already do. The club met Wednesday night to discuss the positive impacts a train stop could bring to Elon University.

Referrals and arrests at Elon rise from past years

Arrests and referrals for drug and liquor related violations jumped at Elon University from 2016 to 2018. Elon is the only school among its peer institutions to see a percentage increase in all four drug and liquor categories, according to data from campus police departments, published in federally required reports.

The Inn at Elon's unique mission

Local Farm doing its part to fight hunger in the area

However, Guilford County officials and community members are working to change that by donating fresh produce.

La clínica de atención médica local ofrece una ayuda vital a los residentes sin seguro del condado de Alamance

Valerie Epperson, residente del condado de Alamance, afirmó que no cree que estaría viva si no fuera por la Clínica Open Door del condado de Alamance, una clínica que brinda atención médica gratuita a personas sin seguro médico. “Cuando empecé a ir a la clínica, mi diabetes estaba descontrolada y comía lo que quería. Simplemente no me importaba”, dijo Epperson. “Cuando tienes a alguien que te ayuda, te mantiene alerta y te recuerda constantemente: ‘Tienes que hacer esto. Tienes que dejar de hacer aquello’”.

Local healthcare clinic provides lifeline to uninsured Alamance County residents

Alamance County resident Valerie Epperson said she doesn’t think she would be alive right now if it were not for the Open Door Clinic of Alamance County, a clinic that provides free healthcare to people who do not have insurance. “When I first started, my diabetes were out of control, and I was just eating anything I wanted. It’s like, I just didn’t care,” Epperson said. “When you have someone there to help you, it keeps your mind open all the time about, ‘Hey, you need to do this. You need to stop doing this.’”
