How to celebrate Pride Month in and around Alamance County

Celebrated in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, Pride Month commemorates LGBTQIA+ communities, their ongoing pursuit for equal justice under the law and their accomplishments. Garay said when they look at queer history, they start with Stonewall but also reflect on the events that came after, such as the 2015 Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

A look into Elon University commencement setup

During the week prior to the both undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies, contractors and staff from Elon University prepared numerous venues for ceremonies. A majority of the preparations inside Elon University’s Schar Center, the venue for the undergraduate graduation ceremony, began on Friday, May 13.

Elon University LGBTQIA+ communities respond to targeted legislation

Over 200 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have been introduced across almost 40 states in 2022 so far, according to the LGBTQIA+ rights group Freedom For All Americans. One highly publicized example is Florida’s HB 1557 — commonly called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill — which was passed in late March by Gov. Ron DeSantis. The bill censors language in schools on gender identity and sexual orientation from kindergarten to third grade.

Elon University Chinese club celebrates full recognition on campus

Two rejections and two years of waiting is what the Chinese club at Elon University has been through. From the first and second club proposals rejected in 2017 and 2018, to finally getting accepted with a provisional club status in 2020, the club has been through a lot. But after two years of waiting, the organization finally became fully recognized this spring semester.

Local textile mill celebrates 140th anniversary

Alamance County had 30 textile mills running by the end of the 20th Century according to the Textile Heritage Museum. Elon University history professor Mary Jo Festle thinks textile mills played a big part in forming the values of Alamance County that can still be seen today.
