Samantha Sussman ‘25 is studying journalism, policy studies and criminal justice at Elon University. Sussman serves as the Lifestyle Editor at Elon News Network, assigning stories and editing content, as well as reporting. Sussman focuses on diverse student perspectives and the human aspect of stories. In her free time Sussman likes to travel, hike and spend quality time with family and friends.

Elon University LGBTQIA+ communities respond to targeted legislation

Over 200 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have been introduced across almost 40 states in 2022 so far, according to the LGBTQIA+ rights group Freedom For All Americans. One highly publicized example is Florida’s HB 1557 — commonly called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill — which was passed in late March by Gov. Ron DeSantis. The bill censors language in schools on gender identity and sexual orientation from kindergarten to third grade.

Elon University tech takes the spotlight

As the stage lights up in McCrary Theatre, the audience can see the story come to life with the sets, costumes and designs. According to senior stage manager for Elon University’s production of Into the Woods, Sydney Bell, said this is due to the months of hard work by the crew prior to the performance. Bell said that although the technical side of theater is often overlooked by the audience, it is what makes the magic happen.

RESULTS: Elon Board of Aldermen

With five out of five town of Elon precincts reported in, there were 1,172 total votes for the Elon Board of Alderman Election. There were 623 votes for Bourland, 522 for Orwig and 27 write-in ballots on election day.

Elon University staff member Stephanie Bourland and Elon Community Church Senior Pastor Randy Orwig will fill the two vacant seats on the Elon Board of Alderman. The polls have closed which means Bourland and Orwig, who were running unopposed, will join the board.

Fall Pride at Elon University

Elon University’s Gender and LGBTQIA Center held a Fall Pride event this Friday, Oct. 22 at the Phi Beta Kappa Commons from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event had games, tie-dye, GLC information and a safe environment to meet new people.
