Senior Lecturer in English Paula Patch had been teaching all of her classes in-person. She had plans for students to learn remotely, but never thought she would have to use them herself. Patch said she thought she might get COVID-19 from being on campus, but never thought the virus would be brought into her home.
27 students have faced or are in the process of facing conduct charges for hosting mass gatherings as of Sept. 12, according to Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley, representing an increase of 20 students since Aug. 25. Students who are charged with hosting gatherings larger than what is allowed by the university and town of Elon are suspended from campus.
David Grass, a research assistant at Duke University, is one of seven researchers who were involved and who created this device. The group’s goal was to create a low-cost way to test the effectiveness of different face coverings.
Elon University ranks No. 88 among national universities and No. 55 among private universities on the U.S. News and World Report 2021 list of best national universities. This ranking is down four spots both overall and for private universities from the 2020 list, when Elon ranked No. 84 and No. 51 一 Elon’s first year of eligibility for the list.
Elon students aren’t the only ones getting suspended for violating coronavirus restrictions. Elon Dining employee Amanda Parrish was suspended last weekend for taking off her mask during her shift.

Elon University sophomore Bella Roy said she had to go into quarantine after an individual she had been in close contact with tested positive for COVID-19. Roy had a negative test result, but still had to undergo a two-week quarantine. The two-week quarantine period for close contacts are the guidance and directives of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Alamance County Health Department.
Currently, the random COVID-19 testing for students is being conducted every Wednesday in Alumni Gym while testing for faculty and staff is being done through mail-in tests. Students receive instructions on how to sign-up for a time and more information about what to expect in the email from Stein.
Elon University professors voted in favor of a motion asking Postmaster General and Board of Trustee member Louis DeJoy to commit to improving the service provided by the United States Postal Service and absolve his personal conflict of interests or step down as trustee to the university at the Sept. 4 faculty meeting.
On Saturday Sept. 5, protesters marched through the streets of Greensboro in honor of the upcoming anniversary of the Black man’s death. The event was called the March for Marcus and was put on WHOA: Working Class & Houseless Organizing Alliance — a group that helps promote change for “the working class, homeless, migrant and other disenfranchised communities,” according to the groups Facebook page.

Elon University is renting hotel rooms at the Tru by Hilton hotel and Holiday Inn Express in Burlington for students who need to quarantine after contracting or being potentially exposed to the coronavirus, according to the Holiday Inn Express and students staying at Tru hotel.
UNC is the site of a phase three COVID-19 vaccine trial, meaning the vaccine is now being administered to thousands of people in order to determine its effectiveness. The trial at UNC is led by doctors Cynthia Gay, David Wohl and Joseph Eron in UNC’s division of infectious diseases.
