Three town of Elon railroad crossings will be closed starting at 7 a.m. on Sept. 17, according to the town of Elon and Elon Police Department. The Gilliam Road, York Road and tentatively Oak Avenue crossings will be closed.
The Gilliam Road and York Road crossings both have road closure signage as of 10:45 p.m. on Sept. 16; the Oak Avenue crossing does not.
A Facebook post from the town advised drivers to use alternate routes and follow signs posted as construction continues.
According to the Facebook post, there are two additional railroad crossings within Elon. Williamson Avenue and Church Street have yet to close and will be refurbished in the coming weeks.
Norfolk Southern and the North Carolina Railroad Company have been in Elon putting out the tracks and other materials for the upcoming project.
According to the North Carolina Railroad Company, the project is meant to improve 69 miles of aging rail between Greensboro and Raleigh. The company says repairs will improve the safety, reliability and long-term performance of one of the busiest corridors.
According to the town of Elon’s website, the rail replacement will increase rail capacity and improve traffic flow.
