ACLU of North Carolina files lawsuit against Graham for denying protest permits at Confederate monument

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina filed a lawsuit and temporary restraining order against the city of Graham and Alamance County officials. The lawsuit challenges Graham’s Code of Ordinance on granting protest permits, claiming it is unconstitutional, as well as the refusal to grant permits.

Students continue to push for the bias reporting system to evolve, but Elon did not always have a bias reporting system — students were first able to submit online reports and use the reporting hotline starting in the fall of the 2012-2013 school year.

Determining action: inside Elon University's bias reporting system and student conduct process

Reports submitted by students first go through the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence before being sent to the Office of Student Conduct. It is there that determinations are made of whether or not an incident is in violation of the Code of Conduct under the student handbook, and not at the CEIE, according to Leigh-Anne Royster, director of the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence.

Elon University Police’s mutual aid agreement, explained

The Elon University Police Department is in an annual mutual aid agreement with local law enforcement agencies in Alamance County. This mutual aid agreement has been under scrutiny by Elon students, faculty and staff after the department assisted at the other agencies at the Confederate monument in Graham.

Center for Leadership building to be named after Janice Ratliff, first building named after a Black woman

The Center for Leadership will be renamed after Janice Ratliff, who was an Elon University staff member for over 30 years, making her the first Black woman and person to have a building named after her on Elon’s campus.

Former Elon baseball players, now professionals, adapt to summer without baseball

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, multiple professional sports have had their seasons put on hold, including MLB's and Minor League Baseball’s 2020 season. Multiple former Elon University baseball players occupy various levels of the minor leagues and have been sent home by their respective organizations.

Elon University requires face coverings indoors and when social distancing outside is impossible

Elon University announced a new mask policy in which students, faculty and staff are required to wear face coverings while indoors as well as outdoors when six feet of physical distance cannot be maintained. The new mask policy went into effect 5 p.m. June 26.

Judge rules against ACE Speedway, sides with state orders

North Carolina mandates face coverings statewide, Alamance County surpasses 1000 coronavirus cases

Face coverings will now be required in public places for all individuals in North Carolina effective Friday, June 26, Gov. Roy Cooper announced on Wednesday. In a press conference,Cooper said this mandate under Executive Order No. 147 comes after the continuous increase in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in the state.

Low census response rate could cost Alamance County, Elon funds

54.1% of Elon residents have completed the 2020 Census, which began collecting responses in March, according to data released from the U.S. Census Bureau. Alamance County could lose more than $7 million in annual funding based on nonresponse to the census, a report from the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management said.

ACE Speedway temporarily shut down by the state

Jason and Robert Turner, owners of ACE Speedway in Altamahaw, opened for their first race since October on May 23, after Gov. Roy Cooper initiated Phase 2 of reopening North Carolina amid the coronavirus pandemic. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services issued an abatement order against the speedway for violating mass gathering limitations.

LabCorp, Cone Health help mitigate coronavirus pandemic on local and national scale

With the help of LabCorp, Cone Health started providing polymerase chain reaction tests to their patients. LabCorp was the first commercial lab in the U.S. to provide these tests. With testing at three different locations in North Carolina — one located in Alamance County at the Alamance Regional Medical Center — healthcare workers at Cone Health collect nasal swabs from patients then shipped the samples to LabCorp for testing.

Elon student creates virtual choir to keep students singing through the pandemic

Miles Caraballo, an Elon junior, was sitting at home in April when the idea of creating a virtual choir came to him. Inspired by virtual choirs created by American composer Eric Whitacre, Caraballo decided to try and put his own virtual choir together.
