Masks reinstated for beginning of semester

Beginning Aug. 16 all students, faculty, staff and visitors must wear masks in indoor campus spaces. The decision was made out of “an abundance of caution” due to the number of community members traveling to campus at the beginning of the semester and the increased virus transmission in Alamance and Guilford counties due to the Delta variant of the coronavirus, according to the university.

Board of Aldermen approves Equality Resolution

The Board of Aldermen approved an Equality Resolution, after nearly four months of discussion, at the Aug. 10, 2021 meeting. The board also recognized the promotion of Lt. Lyle Anibal to assistant chief of operations at the town of Elon police department, discussed commonly asked questions regarding water and sewer bills and approved a resolution for the town of Elon to secure loans for the purchase of the Travis Creek Pump Station from Gibsonville.

The City of Burlington announces next chief of police

The City of Burlington announced George “Rich” Austin Jr. will be the city’s newest chief of police. The Charlotte native plans to relocate to Burlington in the coming weeks and most recently served as the police chief of Milton, Georgia since January 2017.

Board of Aldermen hears preliminary ADA self-assessment findings

The Board of Aldermen met for an agenda session Monday, August 2. Members discussed the town’s self-assessment of the accessibility of facilities and programs, a budget amendment for the police department and retirement benefits for town employees. The board also discussed adopting an equality resolution and the town’s decision to look into vaccination and mask requirements for town employees.

The Centers for Disease Control announced that it is recommending vaccinated people wear masks in public indoor settings and areas of high COVID-19 transmission. The new science shows that the Delta variant is the prominent strand in the United States.

Michael Woods announces campaign for mayor of the town of Elon

Michael Woods, an Elon resident, said seeing the Pro-Trump caravan driving through Elon inspired him to run for mayor of the town of Elon this fall. Woods hopes his campaign for mayor will encourage the community to confront concerns over inclusiveness.

Dejuana Bigelow campaigning for ‘one Burlington’ this fall

Dejuana Bigelow, a patient access specialist at Cone Health, announced her candidacy for a seat on the Burlington City Council. If elected, she would be the first African American woman to serve on the city council. Bigelow said the absence of diversity on the council is something that she hopes to see change.

Elon University announces Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education

President of Elon University Connie Book announced the naming of the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education in honor of the $10 million gift, made by the Williams family,  to Elon and Willliams’ service as an educator and administrator. The commitment, part of the Elon LEADS campaign, represents the largest endowment in the university’s history.

Boil Water Notice lifted for Elon University campus, city of Burlington

The Boil Water Notice for City of Burlington water customers is now lifted, which applies to Elon University’s main campus, the towns of Elon and Gibsonville and other surrounding communities. Tests on water samples have come back clean and no E. coli is present in the City’s water distribution system.

Anita Hodnett invites new initiatives to Elon Counseling Services as director

Anita Hodnett first stepped onto Elon’s campus in 2012 wanting to support college students as they transition into young adulthood. She started off as a staff counselor and later was promoted to assistant director of Counseling Services in 2018. This fall, Hodnett will enter her ninth year at Elon, but this time as the director of Counseling Services.

According to Insider Higher Education, 65% of college students report having mental health struggles during the coronavirus pandemic. The study found that many students choose not to seek help, with only 15% reporting they have seen a counselor.

Board of Aldermen to discuss equality resolution at August meeting

Two Board of Aldermen members were tasked at the May meeting to draft an outline of what an anti-discrimination ordinance could look like in the town of Elon. Board members are expected to discuss the equality resolution at the August 10 meeting.
