Dean Emeritus, Elon Law Professor George Johnson Jr. dies following prolonged illness

Dean Emeritus and professor of law George Johnson Jr. died on Nov.15, following a prolonged illness. Johnson joined Elon Law as a member of the founding faculty and served as the law school’s first associate dean of academic affairs. He then served as an interim dean from August 2008 through February 2009.

Elon women's soccer enters the unknown without spring schedule

University football and basketball teams have been given a schedule for CAA play, but women’s soccer has yet to confirm that its spring season will actually happen. The team started off practices with small groups of four members and no contact during drills. They’ve now worked up to full team practices with contact and weight training in two groups.

Elon SGA hosts Provost Volety, legislation for new speed bumps fails

he Student Government Association hosted Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Aswani Volety during their weekly business meeting to speak on new updates in academics for the 2020-21 school year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Representatives later debated and voted to not pass new legislation that sought to approve $6,000 of SGA reserve funding to install speed bumps and speed limit signs on Phoenix Drive.

Fall semester changes traditional freshman experience

There are over 1,500 freshmen enrolled this year. With the semester looking different than in the past, many freshmen have appreciated being on campus, but some are struggling to balance school work, making friends and staying safe during a pandemic.

Local businesses prepare for departure of students for Thanksgiving break

In just a few weeks, North Williamson Avenue will experience a downturn in traffic as students are leaving campus for a winter break longer than usual. Stores such as All That Jas and The Oak House are preparing for this shift in business.

Marching through a pandemic

Marching band, like all other clubs and organizations on Elon’s campus, was given a series of guidelines by the administration in order to conduct operations safely and limit the spread of the coronavirus. For the band, these guidelines led to shorter practices and practicing in small groups organized by instrument rather than as a whole, while remaining at least six feet apart.

University, town to take actions to improve safety in Elon

After students expressed their concerns and the establishment of a roundtable by Elon University President Connie Book, “immediate actions” are being taken by the university following a convoy in support of President Donald Trump that drove through Elon in September. These action steps involve the collaboration with the town of Elon.

Elon reenvisions Festival of Holiday Lights

Typically, students assemble in front of Alamance Building for an evening of live music, hot chocolate, apple cider, snacks and an appearance from Santa Claus. The event will reportedly not host live performances this year to minimize crowding. But this year, students will have access to a virtual component including QR codes to help guide them to different stations set up throughout the Academic Village instead of events being centrally located at Alamance building.

Study abroad plans for Elon community put on hold

There are 19 students — 13 of them undergraduates — currently participating in study abroad or study USA programs. There are seven students abroad in Germany, Rwanda, South Korea and the United Kingdom and six students completing Business Dual Degree programs in France, Germany and Spain.

Board of Aldermen approves five story building for Twin Lakes

The Board of Aldermen voted this week to approve granting the Lutheran Retirement Ministries a special ordinance to build a five-story apartment project in the Twin Lakes Community campus, which will be the town’s first five story building.

Hope springs eternal for Elon football

The CAA announced that it would be playing on an adjusted schedule in the spring, which includes six conference games with the option for individual teams to schedule two out-of-conference games. The team has been doing what it can to stay ready for the spring. On Oct. 17, the team started full team practices with COVID-19 guidelines.

Volleyball seniors adjust to new reality

Some of the COVID-19 restrictions include: players not being allowed to physically congratulate each other after plays, something that would be standard in practices and games. If a player breaks this protocol, their coaches will warn them. Players also hold each other accountable.

COVID-19 affects early decision applications for incoming students

Elon University offers all three of these options and on average, 393 students apply early decision per year. This year, however, the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench into the college application process. As the pandemic has impacted the economy and workforce, many students have had to reevaluate their college choice.
