Burlington Baseball rebrands to new name Sock Puppets

After a six month search reviewing over 1,200 names as well as keeping in consideration Alamance County’s history in the textile industry, the owners of the Burlington Baseball team landed on the new name — the Burlington Sock Puppets.

President Book welcomes home new puppy

A mere four pounds and full of energy, this week, Elon University President Connie Book welcomed home her new dog, Beaux Oakley. The 12-week-old Yorkshire Terrier was adopted from a breeder in Oak Ridge; a town about 35 miles west from Elon.

Elon University commencement plans in flux

According to a university spokesman, there is currently no timeline for making a decision regarding commencement for the class of 2021. But Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee, said right now, the university is planning for both the possibility of commencement happening or not — for both the class of 2020 and 2021. He said it would be “foolish” of them to make a decision now, but hopes to alert students and families of a decision by March.

Elon men's basketball look to future after long layoff

The team’s last matchup was a double-header against the Northeastern Huskies on Jan. 2-3. After postponements, the Phoenix’s next potential game would be Jan. 30 at the University of Delaware. If the Phoenix take on the Blue Hens at the end of the month, it will be a full 27 days since its last game.

Elon student remembered as 'someone to rely on'

James Markley, an Elon University sophomore, has died at 20. Markley, a Burlington resident and Western Alamance High School graduate, died at his home and his cause of death is unknown at this time, according to a university wide email.

Elon names Gozik as new dean of global education

Nick Gozik will start his new role as dean of global education at Elon University on Jan. 25 after a two year search following former dean Woody Pelton’s retirement. He said he hopes to continue expanding and improving global engagement and international programs in his new role at the university.

Craig Turner to fill vacant seat on Alamance County Board of Commissioners

Craig Turner, first vice chair of the Alamance County GOP, was elected by the Alamance County GOP executive committee to fill the vacant seat on the Alamance County Board of Commissioners. Turner is an Alamance County native, Elon Law alumnus ‘10 and veteran, serving in the US Navy for eight and a half years.

Elon University aims to administer COVID-19 vaccines

University physician and member of the Ready & Resilient committee Ginette Archinal said that getting approval to become a vaccine site is a process with a lot of moving parts. Not only does the university have to have the ability to store vaccine doses, but there also have to be enough people to distribute the vaccine, and any distribution site must have the ability to record the data from the vaccinations.

Rabbi Sandra Lawson to leave Elon

Lawson said she will be accepting a new position as the director of diversity, equity and inclusion at Reconstructing Judaism, a modern Jewish organization dedicated to progressively shaping the religion. According to Lawson, she’ll still be a resident of Alamance County and keeping in touch with any students that still want her to be their rabbi.

New Alamance County health director faces challenges of COVID-19 response

When Tony Lo Giudice took on his new role as Alamance County’s health director on Nov. 30, the position had been in flux for almost five months after previous Health Director Stacie Saunders — who held the position since 2014 — left the department in July and Alexandria Rimmer, Alamance County’s environmental health specialist, assumed the role in the interim.

Alamance County expected to receive shipments of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine

Alamance County Health Director Tony Lo Giudice said Alamance County has prioritized the Moderna vaccine over the Pfizer vaccine because of the health department’s existing storage infrastructure. Lo Giudice expects the first shipment of the Moderna vaccine to arrive in Alamance County the week of Dec. 21.

An Elon staple may soon be experiencing a drastic change: Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream is being sold. After 18 years, co-owners Amy Nakhle and Tom Lambeth have made the call to pass the downtown Elon staple to someone new. Smitty’s has three locations across Alamance County — all of which are up for sale.

Computer requirement for business students to begin fall 2021

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business at Elon University will require students to use a Windows computer for all business classes beginning in the fall of 2021. The business school cites macOS compatibility issues as the reason for switching to Windows. LSB Dean Raghu Tadepalli said the business school announced this recently in hopes that families would take advantage of holiday sales to buy new computers.
