Businessman and Democrat Eric Henry and Republican State Representative Dennis Riddell will compete for the 64th District’s seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives, a district that encompasses a large portion of Alamance County. Henry will look to topple Riddell’s incumbency, while Riddell will look to secure his fifth term as representative.

Los estudiantes de Ciencias de la Salud aprenden español para sus futuras carreras profesionales

Existía la posibilidad de que las clases de conversación para profesionales de la salud no se llevaran a cabo este año debido a la pandemia. Sin embargo, el programa de fisioterapia decidió continuar con las clases después de que Nan Yang, una estudiante de fisioterapia y la representante de diversidad, equidad e inclusión de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Elon, dijo que los estudiantes sintieron que este programa debería estar disponible, incluso si tuviera que hacerse de forma remota.

Health Science students learn Spanish for prospective careers

There was a chance the Conversational Spanish for Health Care Professionals classes were not going to happen this year due to the pandemic. However, the Physical Therapy program decided to continue with the classes after Nan Yang, a physical therapy student and the diversity, equity and inclusion representative of Elon University’s School of Health Sciences said that students felt this program should be available, even if it had to be done remotely.

Hundreds of Elon University students, faculty and staff participated in a protest and march through campus Friday. Juunior Hana Hawthorne, one of the organizers, said this protest was motivated by the convoy supporting President Donald Trump that drove through campus on Sept. 19.

Homeless shelters maintain service to communities during pandemic

Allied Churches of Alamance County’s homeless shelters have not reported a single coronavirus case. The coronavirus pandemic has posed unique problems to homeless shelters like ACAC, forcing them to reevaluate everything from how beds were arranged to what cleaning supplies could be used in the shelters and how to fundraise virtually.

Homecoming goes virtual this year to keep community safe

The events hosted this year will range from virtual tours around campus to a town hall with President Connie Book. According to the Senior Director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving, Brian Feeley, the university is going to be using Zoom for most events, but will also take advantage of video reporting.

Guide to absentee voting in Alamance County, North Carolina

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, election officials have considered many aspects of voting to ensure safe elections in 2020, according to Benjamin Ansbacher, chairman of the Alamance County Board of Elections. Ansbacher spoke with Elon News Network and offered what he believes students need to know about absentee voting and mail-in ballots in North Carolina for Election Day 2020.

CAA announces adjusted football schedule for spring 2021

The schedule includes a shortened six game schedule with two optional out of conference games, which would not be counted in the conference standings or tie breaking procedures. Play is expected to resume on March 6 and continue on through April 17.

On Wednesday evening, Elon University’s Student Government Association hosted a fireside chat featuring President Connie Book with questions moderated by Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley. Throughout the chat, Book answered pre-submitted questions as well as live questions from student government representatives and other Elon community members.

North Carolina to move into Phase 3 of reopening Friday

North Carolina will move “cautiously” to Phase 3 of reopening beginning on Friday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m., Gov. Roy Cooper said at a press briefing today. The Phase 3 executive order will remain in effect until Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. It comes as the number of new coronavirus cases has leveled in North Carolina after a spike in August, according to Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Mandy Cohen.

Elon University students concerned about socialization in Level 3 COVID-19 alert

In Level 3, the university is advising members of the community to adjust daily activities and limit social interactions to increase safety. For sophomore Stephanie Miljanic, the actions of the university are not socially sustainable and students are struggling with the lack of interaction. Miljanic felt that students are wondering what the long-term impacts on their interpersonal relations and mental health will be.

Elon University mascot spreads spirit, with or without sports

At every game, tailgate and sporting event, you see it. The personality and face of Elon University doing cartwheels down the fields, cheering on fans and making every person around it go wild. Even now, The Phoenix is part of Elon University culture — although it may not be able to do cartwheels on a Zoom call. Elon Athletics determined it was not safe to play sports with close contact this semester. Thus, the Phoenix found itself without its normal schedule of events for the fall.

Despite having few colleagues with a similar background, professor of Spanish Federico Pous said that in his six years at the school, he has found his home within the university’s Spanish department.
