Elon University student workers and faculty eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccine in Group 3

Elon University faculty and support staff, including any students working as resident assistants, apartment managers or in a capacity that creates direct exposure to the virus, will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 beginning March 3, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The university has also been approved to become a vaccine distribution site and will be able to directly provide vaccines to those in Group 3. Elon has not been allocated vaccine doses as of March 2.

Elon sophomore starts cookie business

Sophomore Nathan Moskowitz realized that Elon’s campus was sorely lacking a cookie business after his friend drove to Raleigh just for a sweet-treat. Moskowitz is the owner and founder of the small baking operation, Nate’s Cookies, which he runs out of his apartment. Moskowitz said he has always been passionate about cooking and inspiring joy in others.

Burlington woman raises mental health awareness with children's book

It was Adrienne Barr's now 15-year-old daughter Leah who inspired her to share her and Leah’s personal battles with anxiety to help others and uplift members of the Black community. This passion led to the creation of her book, “Dancing with Butterflies: Discovering Mindfulness Through Breathing.”

Elon University student-teachers to receive COVID-19 vaccine

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced that student-teachers will be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, alongside teachers and other school employees. According to the latest NCDHHS vaccination plan, frontline essential workers such as educators are included in the third group.

Town of Elon and members of SGA partner to clean up litter

The town of Elon is set to hold  a Community Clean Up event on Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. around the town. The event comes after  a public comment made by a town resident at the last Board of Aldermen meeting. The resident was concerned about the level of litter in his neighborhood. Members of the Board of Aldermen and Elon University’s Student Government Association are calling on students to attend.

Tough topics inspire art, celebration of Black History Month

The 2021 Black History Month Dance Concert came with long hours of rehearsal and conversations that left dancers in tears of mixed emotions. The concert features numbers in dance styles like West African dance, a poet laureate of North Carolina and a live band. Unlike in past years where a recital occurred live, the cast and crew filmed the show in November, and the significance of the performance has only increased since.

SGA ratifies new constitution

Elon University’s Student Government Association voted 35-9 to ratify proposed changes to the constitution, which would change the structure of the organization, at the Feb. 25 business meeting after two and a half hours of debate. Beginning in the 2022 election cycle, SGA would be structured in three branches: the executive, legislative and judicial branches.

Advancing diversity, equity and inclusion for faculty and staff

The working group for diversity, equity and inclusion of the academic council — the governing body over faculty — is working to include information addressing bias in the faculty handbook, particularly with regard to evaluation for faculty. The university is also working to redesign the bias response system and will debut a new training program for all university employees.

Elon celebrates Love Your Body Week as it coincides with National Eating Disorder Awareness Week

Feb. 22 through 26 is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, which will coincide with the sixth year of Campus Recreation and Wellness’ Love Your Body Week. Campus Rec is working in partnership with Counseling Services, Elon Dining, the Produce Box and several other sponsors to create a week of events to promote all aspects of loving one’s body mentally, physically and emotionally.

​Gov. Roy Cooper lifts modified stay-at-home order as NC COVID-19 cases decline

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced at a press conference on Wednesday that the modified stay-at-home order in the state will be lifted on Friday at 5 p.m. The order, which was originally put in place after North Carolina saw an influx of COVID-19 cases after the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, is being lifted after the state has seen a downward trend in cases for the last few months, according to Cooper.

Greek life organizations forced to pause in-person activities

Greek life organizations, the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils, are now working to revise their plans for recruitment after Elon University ordered all fraternity and sorority activity to move to completely virtual environments. The order, issued to greek organizations Sunday, aims to limit small group interactions amid the coronavirus pandemic after multiple reports of parties and unmasked social gatherings.

Breaking down SGA's proposed constitution

The proposed constitution comes after a committee determined the previous constitution allowed everything to be done internally, which didn’t include the rest of the student body in their decision making. The new constitution structures SGA in a similar way to the United States Government, with three branches: legislative, judicial and executive.

Joseph LeMire chosen as Elon University's next chief of campus safety and police

Joe LeMire will serve as Elon University’s chief of campus safety and police starting March 29. The university chose the former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee police chief after restarting the search process in the fall. The first search was conducted last spring, but was paused and ultimately stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Burlington baker uses generational skills at Black-owned business

Right next to the hustle and bustle of Route 49 in Burlington stands a gray brick house — separated from the road by a lawn — with a sign in the window that reads “life is sweet.” Inside, Alicia Wingate is living her childhood dream. Wingate learned how to bake from her mom and said she encourages aspiring Black and female business owners to take a leap and follow their dreams.

Elon men’s basketball defeats William & Mary in possible last regular season game

Elon’s defense clamped down on the Tribe, holding them to a 40.5% shooting percentage while causing 21 turnovers in the process. The Phoenix offense was proficient with its shooting, hitting on 48.3% of its field goals. Sturdy defense mixed with offensive efficiency led to multiple scoring drives all night that kept the Phoenix ahead of the Tribe for the entire game.

Elon senior turns art into business

Arielle Brochin began creating art in both her advanced high school art classes and in her free time. Eventually, she wanted to share this talent with others, so during COVID-19, she turned to Instagram to showcase her artwork. Brochin uses her platform to showcase the art she creates in both her free time and in her Elon art classes.

Professors to be notified of quarantined students via OnTrack

Elon University professors will now be able to monitor a student’s quarantine status via OnTrack, using the online course roster. Previously, instructors received an email when students were put in isolation.
