Elon alumni find work while theaters remain dark

During a time where live theatre is at a standstill, Broadway professionals and Elon alumni have taken to television acting and even Tik Tok to continue their careers. One alumnus J.J.  Niemann starred in “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” which has raised over $2 million for The Actor’s Fund, a charity that supports workers in the performing arts and entertainment industries.

Elon students weigh staying home for spring semester

The academic experience — all-nighters in the library, lab experiments, class field trips and connecting with professors during office hours — are all aspects of in-person instruction that have been redesigned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, students are adjusting to an online learning environment as virtual instruction has become widely prevalent in the education process over the past 11 months.

Alamance County Commissioners approve 25,000 square foot COVID-19 vaccine site

The approval of the indoor space comes after Tony Lo Giudice, the Alamance County health director, told the board that the county’s demand for COVID-19 vaccinations is growing. The new indoor vaccination site will help with the county’s growing demand and is set to be leased for at least 3 months starting Feb. 1. The lease cost for the space will be $23,958.33 per month and can be renewed on a monthly basis

President Book welcomes home new puppy

A mere four pounds and full of energy, this week, Elon University President Connie Book welcomed home her new dog, Beaux Oakley. The 12-week-old Yorkshire Terrier was adopted from a breeder in Oak Ridge; a town about 35 miles west from Elon.

Elon University commencement plans in flux

According to a university spokesman, there is currently no timeline for making a decision regarding commencement for the class of 2021. But Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee, said right now, the university is planning for both the possibility of commencement happening or not — for both the class of 2020 and 2021. He said it would be “foolish” of them to make a decision now, but hopes to alert students and families of a decision by March.

Elon men's basketball look to future after long layoff

The team’s last matchup was a double-header against the Northeastern Huskies on Jan. 2-3. After postponements, the Phoenix’s next potential game would be Jan. 30 at the University of Delaware. If the Phoenix take on the Blue Hens at the end of the month, it will be a full 27 days since its last game.

Elon names Gozik as new dean of global education

Nick Gozik will start his new role as dean of global education at Elon University on Jan. 25 after a two year search following former dean Woody Pelton’s retirement. He said he hopes to continue expanding and improving global engagement and international programs in his new role at the university.

Elon University aims to administer COVID-19 vaccines

University physician and member of the Ready & Resilient committee Ginette Archinal said that getting approval to become a vaccine site is a process with a lot of moving parts. Not only does the university have to have the ability to store vaccine doses, but there also have to be enough people to distribute the vaccine, and any distribution site must have the ability to record the data from the vaccinations.

Rabbi Sandra Lawson to leave Elon

Lawson said she will be accepting a new position as the director of diversity, equity and inclusion at Reconstructing Judaism, a modern Jewish organization dedicated to progressively shaping the religion. According to Lawson, she’ll still be a resident of Alamance County and keeping in touch with any students that still want her to be their rabbi.

‘We've forgotten about the conversation’: HIV/AIDS still hits the South as awareness fades

45 years after the first reported cases of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., the fight against this disease is far from over, especially in the South. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the South accounted for 52% of all HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2023. "We know that HIV/AIDS has had a disproportionate effect on people of color or queer people of color in this country," Professor of communication studies at Vanderbilt University Jeff Bennett said. "You have many people living in rural areas. You might have distrust of medical providers, you have the social stigma.”
