Peaceful march to the polls in Graham following Saturday’s attempt to march

Hundreds of marchers came to Graham to march to a polling site on Election Day. This march followed the “I Am Change: Legacy March to The Polls,” which was cut short after police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd and multiple people were arrested.

Elon Votes sees increase in student voter registration, expects greater turnout in 2020 election

Elon University students historically have had lower political participation. The Princeton Review ranked Elon six in the country for colleges with the least-politically active students, based on students’ ratings of their own political awareness. Since August 2020, 32% of Elon students have registered for the first time with Elon Votes.

Alamance County voters head to the polls on Election Day

As of Nov. 3, North Carolina had 7.3 million registered voters, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections website. NCSBE said it anticipates that the results reported by the end of election night will include 97% or more of all ballots cast in North Carolina in the 2020 general election. Some Alamance County voters opted to vote in-person on Election Day.

East Haggard Avenue to be closed on election night

East Haggard Avenue will be closed on election night until Nov. 5 for an art project that will take place on the road. Elon University applied for a special events request for the closure of the road. This request was approved the day before the road was expected to close.

Elon cans composting due to pandemic precautions

Only single-use containers are being used on campus this semester, as well as in the dining halls, as an effort to minimize the risk of transmitting COVID-19. Post-consumer compostable waste, such as used to-go boxes, is not currently being composted this fall semester due to challenges coming from COVID-19, according to the Elon sustainability website.

Elon students, others released from custody after being pepper sprayed during march

Two Elon University students, along with other marchers,  are out of police custody after being arrested during a march for voting rights and justice.The event was civil until members of law enforcement began pepper spraying marchers. Members of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office and Graham Police Department were present on scene.

Multiple marchers arrested, pepper sprayed in Graham at march for voting rights and justice

A march for voting rights and racial justice in Graham — that was headed to an early voting location — was dispersed after a clash with law enforcement. Law enforcement used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the crowd that was gathered in front of the Alamance County courthouse.

Alamance County's people of the polls

Voters in Alamance County have lined up at the polls for early voting at the county's five locations. Adrianne Mowry has been at Holly Hill Mall encouraging voters to vote for the Green Party while Sadie Howard-Stanfield has been working at polls for over 30 years and his currently the Democratic precint chair at the Elmira Community Chair.

Contact tracing catches COVID-19 clusters

Within the past two weeks, ten clusters have been identified by the Alamance County Health Department amongst Elon University students. Clusters of COVID-19 cases have been popping up in residence halls and greek organizations across campus. Seven fraternities and sororities and three freshman dorms all have had clusters.
