Meals on Wheels delivers hope to Alamance County senior community

Over 800 Meals on Wheels volunteers are traveling around Alamance County to deliver meals to seniors, families, and other individuals who are currently homebound due to the coronavirus pandemic. Social distancing and isolation has created an increased need for residents to receive meals and aid.

Faculty motion regarding postmaster general passes

Elon University professors voted in favor of a motion asking Postmaster General and Board of Trustee member Louis DeJoy to commit to improving the service provided by the United States Postal Service and absolve his personal conflict of interests or step down as trustee to the university at the Sept. 4 faculty meeting.

March in Greensboro honors Marcus Smith almost two years after his death

On Saturday Sept. 5, protesters marched through the streets of Greensboro in honor of the  upcoming anniversary of the Black man’s death. The event was called the March for Marcus and was put on WHOA: Working Class & Houseless Organizing Alliance — a group that helps promote change for “the working class, homeless, migrant and other disenfranchised communities,” according to the groups Facebook page.

SGA town hall focuses on issues of diversity on campus

Elon University’s Student Government Association met for a virtual town hall on the issue of diversity, equity and inclusion on campus on Thursday evening. Junior Malia Takei moderated the town hall, which featured Vice President and Associate Provost for Inclusive Excellence Randy Williams,  Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley and Director of the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence Leigh-Anne Royster.

COVID-19 desproporcionadamente afecta la comunidad Latino de Alamance County

Los hispanos son el 61% de los casos de COVID-19 en Alamance County, o 1,731 de los 2,838 casos en el condado, según el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Sociales. Pero de la población total estimada de Alamance County, sólo el 13.1% son hispanos, aún así ellos son la mayor porción de los infectados con el virus.

COVID-19 disproportionately hits Alamance County Latino community

Hispanic people make up 61% of COVID-19 cases in Alamance County, or 1,731 of the 2,838 cases in the county, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. But of the estimated total population of Alamance County, only 13.1% is Hispanic, yet they make up a large portion of those infected with the virus.

Louis DeJoy's journey to postmaster general

But members of the Elon community know Louis DeJoy as one of the benefactors for Odyssey scholarships, and as a member of the Elon University Board of Trustees since 2007.

North Carolina to move into Phase 2.5 of reopening this week

North Carolina will be moving to Phase 2.5 beginning on Friday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m., Gov. Roy Cooper said at a press briefing today. This move will allow for larger gatherings, expanding the number of people allowed indoors to 25 and 50 people outdoors. Playgrounds, museums and aquariums will also open in Phase 2.5 at 50% capacity.

SGA holds first in-person meeting of the semester

The first Student Government Association business meeting of the fall semester looked a little different this year, with representatives spaced six feet apart — some attending virtually — and wearing masks in Alumni Gym. Delegates discussed a variety of topics, including the new bias reporting system and the university's handling of the coronavirus on campus.

Elon University students quarantining at area hotels

Elon University is renting hotel rooms at the Tru by Hilton hotel and Holiday Inn Express in Burlington for students who need to quarantine after contracting or being potentially exposed to the coronavirus, according to the Holiday Inn Express and students staying at Tru hotel.

COVID-19 vaccine trials push ahead at UNC Chapel Hill

UNC is the site of a phase three COVID-19 vaccine trial, meaning the vaccine is now being administered to thousands of people in order to determine its effectiveness. The trial at UNC is led by doctors Cynthia Gay, David Wohl and Joseph Eron in UNC’s division of infectious diseases.

Club sports prepare for a unique season

As part of preparation for the fall semester, Elon University club sports were given guidelines for both practice and game play. Low-risk sports, such as climbing, equestrian, swimming and golf, are still allowed to travel to compete.  However, low-risk and high-risk sports have been given different guidelines, based on the contact level of their sport. High-risk sports will not be allowed to travel to compete and will not be holding games this fall.
