Elon University community turns to TikTok

Like many others around the world, freshman Cece Guyader has watched the war unfold through their phone screen since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. Countries with open access to social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are able to receive instant news updates about nations overseas. Now, TikTok is changing the content and context of social media — especially on how people view Russia’s war on Ukraine.

While head coach Kathy Bocock serves as a daily role model for Elon University softball players, she became more inspiring to the team when she hit 500 wins as a softball coach during their victory against College of Charleston on April 9. Reaching that 500th win has now placed her as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Elon softball.

Prices across Elon University's campus, downtown increase due to inflation

The increase in prices is a result of the high inflation rate for the U.S., which is 8.5% in 2022 — the highest since December 1981 according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The most recent Consumer Price Index Summary from the department also reported that inflation rates have hit record 40-year highs for the fifth consecutive month. Consumer prices rose 8.5% in the last year, and take out food has even risen 6.9% in the last year.

Brie Perpignan commits to Clemson University as graduate transfer

Senior guard Brie Perpignan, along with all other NCAA athletes who had their seasons impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, was granted an extra year of athletic eligibility, meaning she will be able to play one season at Clemson.

National Alcohol Awareness Month brings focus to Alamance County

Melissa Enoch has been working with alcohol awareness for almost 28 years, but her role is more vital now than ever. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse published a study in March finding that alcohol was an underlying or contributing cause in 25.5% more deaths nationally in 2020 compared to 2019.

Elon University women’s golf team finishes fourth at CAA Championship

College of Charleston won the team competition with a total score of 884, 29 shots ahead of Elon. Charleston sophomore Vikroria Hund won the individual tournament with a final score of 216.

Elon University hires University of Iowa Assistant Coach Billy Taylor as new head coach for men’s basketball

This news comes after former men’s basketball head coach Mike Schrage announced his resignation as head coach and transferred to Duke University for a new role. Schrage will serve as a special assistant to the head coach, Jon Scheyer.
