Finding community by going Greek at Elon

As the excitement of 2020 spring recruitment fades, hundreds of Elon women are now weeks into their new member period, counting down the days until their official initiation into the greek community. These new members contribute to the increasing number of enrolled women choosing to join greek life. But with a history of exclusive practices, some remain skeptical that the benefits of sorority life truly extend to the broader community.

Study USA programs on opposite coasts address coronavirus concerns differently

According to Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, which partners with Elon University’s Study USA program, classes are canceled until March 17 and online instruction will take place from March 19 to April 3. However, the 24 students in Los Angeles plan to continue in-person classes and internships.

CAA tournament to continue at Elon as planned despite coronavirus concerns

Despite Elon University suspending in-person classes after spring break because of the coronavirus, no scheduling changes have been made to the Colonial Athletic Association’s Women’s Basketball Championship tournament. However, the CAA announced that beginning on Thursday, March 12 heavy limitations to fans and spectators would be implemented.

Disinfectant products in Burlington stores are out of stock or running low

Hand sanitizer, face masks, hand soap, latex gloves, disinfectant wipes and sprays are among the items running out of stock across stores in Burlington. Due to high demand and shortage of supplies, Target and CVS has placed limits on how many items can be purchased at a time.

Women's basketball advances in home tournament

Elon women’s basketball downed the tenth-seeded Hofstra Pride 71-51 in the opening round of the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Championship. This is the first time the Schar Center has played host to a basketball conference tournament.

Coronavirus precaution faculty and staff prepare for transition to online classes

Classes will be moving online for two weeks following Spring Break because of the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. According to Christopher Waters, associate vice president of information technology and chief information officer, the office is working to equip professors with the ability to teach online. He said Information Technology will be open to assist professors.

Pi Kappa Phi fraternity removed from campus

In a unanimous decision, the National Council of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity has revoked the associate chapter status of the fraternity on Elon University's campus. Since the associate chapter status at Elon University is now closed, all associate members are free to join other fraternities.

North Carolina declares state of emergency in response to coronavirus

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency in response to five new cases of COVID-19 — also known as the novel coronavirus — bringing the total number of presumed positive cases to seven. The state cannot confirm these cases as positive until they are confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
