North Carolina schools allowed to reopen, ABSS announces hybrid model

North Carolina K-12 public schools are allowed to open for in-person classes this fall, Gov. Roy Cooper announced in a press conference today. However, Cooper is giving school districts the flexibility to choose what model is best for them.

Elon students and faculty protest for the removal of a local Confederate statue

About 700 protesters attended the Burlington-Alamance March for Justice and Community, a march and protest hosted by the Alamance Alliance for Justice and was attended by students and faculty from Elon University. Demonstrators were met with counter protesters at the Confederate monument.

Elon students hold sit-in outside the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office

Non-tenure adjuncts face job instability going into fall semester

Catherine Bush and Robin Gary are two non-tenure faculty members who found out they won't be teaching at Elon University in the fall semester. According to Provost Aswani Volety, the budget reduction and enrollment numbers are some of the reasons non-tenure adjuncts aren't rehired.

New ICE policy leaves international students concerned over immigration statuses this fall

Visa-holding students attending schools with in-person classes, like Elon, can take a maximum of one class online under the new regulation, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. If a mixture of online and in-person classes are offered, students can take more than one online class.

Elon University removes former President William Harper’s name from residence hall

North Carolina non-profit provides funds to Alamance County residents in need during pandemic

Down Home North Carolina, a non-profit advocating for rural communities in the state, established a mutual aid fund in March to help those impacted by the coronavirus in Alamance, Jackson, Hayward, Madison, and Cabarrus counties.

ACLU of North Carolina files lawsuit against Graham for denying protest permits at Confederate monument

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina filed a lawsuit and temporary restraining order against the city of Graham and Alamance County officials. The lawsuit challenges Graham’s Code of Ordinance on granting protest permits, claiming it is unconstitutional, as well as the refusal to grant permits.

Students continue to push for the bias reporting system to evolve, but Elon did not always have a bias reporting system — students were first able to submit online reports and use the reporting hotline starting in the fall of the 2012-2013 school year.

Determining action: inside Elon University's bias reporting system and student conduct process

Reports submitted by students first go through the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence before being sent to the Office of Student Conduct. It is there that determinations are made of whether or not an incident is in violation of the Code of Conduct under the student handbook, and not at the CEIE, according to Leigh-Anne Royster, director of the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence.

Elon University Police’s mutual aid agreement, explained

The Elon University Police Department is in an annual mutual aid agreement with local law enforcement agencies in Alamance County. This mutual aid agreement has been under scrutiny by Elon students, faculty and staff after the department assisted at the other agencies at the Confederate monument in Graham.

Center for Leadership building to be named after Janice Ratliff, first building named after a Black woman

The Center for Leadership will be renamed after Janice Ratliff, who was an Elon University staff member for over 30 years, making her the first Black woman and person to have a building named after her on Elon’s campus.

Former Elon baseball players, now professionals, adapt to summer without baseball

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, multiple professional sports have had their seasons put on hold, including MLB's and Minor League Baseball’s 2020 season. Multiple former Elon University baseball players occupy various levels of the minor leagues and have been sent home by their respective organizations.

Elon University requires face coverings indoors and when social distancing outside is impossible

Elon University announced a new mask policy in which students, faculty and staff are required to wear face coverings while indoors as well as outdoors when six feet of physical distance cannot be maintained. The new mask policy went into effect 5 p.m. June 26.
