When Provost Steven House arrived at Elon University in 2001, he was given one piece of advice from the former provost: don’t break anything. While holding on to that wisdom for the past 18 years, House has not left the university as he found it. House looked beyond not breaking anything, and he started building.

Second provost candidate speaks at Elon

Aswani Volety is the second provost candidate to speak at an open event at Elon University.  On Thursday afternoon, Volety — who is currently a marine biology professor and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington — addressed members of the community in upstairs Lakeside about his qualifications and experience in higher education. He answered how he will leverage opportunities here at Elon to approach challenges that higher education faces in the 21st century.

CEO to Farming: Reverence Farms Café

From CEO suite to farm land, one man changed his life to be with family. Bruce Nelson, part owner and manager of Reverence Farms café made the move from Boca Raton, Florida, to Saxapahaw, North Carolina, just a few years ago. His daughter, Suzanne Nelson had invested herself in farming, and Bruce decided it was time to make the move.

Power outages hit parts of campus

At 3:59 p.m. on May 15 a power outage was first reported to Duke Energy that has impacted much of the east side of campus. East Neighborhood, Danieley Neighborhood and the Francis Center are all currently without power. All together, Duke Energy currently estimates three outages in the area, which also stretches east of campus into several off-campus student housing complexes.

Nation Labor Relations Board officer recommends overruling university objection to new union

On Monday, May 13, a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) officer made the recommendation to the NLRB Regional Officer to overrule an objection filed by Elon University against the Service Employees International Union, Workers United Southern Region (SEIU)-backed push for non-tenure-track faculty members to unionize at Elon. The university and SEIU will have one week to respond to the recommendation.

He considers every moment at his shop in Burlington to be a spiritual experience. All the pieces he has made since he began his business in 2014 have a unique stamp on it — a Bible scripture. Garrett said this scripture is laid in his heart for the family or person for whom the piece is made.

NC law would require rideshares to have an illuminated sign

The illuminated sign on a car showing an Uber or Lyft driver arriving is thought to make ride-sharing services safer, according to John Bell, house majority leader of the North Carolina General Assembly. He is sponsoring a law that would require ride-sharing cars to have a “consistent and distinctive illuminated sign.”

Burlington rolls out system to rank stormwater projects citywide

For years, Burlington residents seeking help with flooding or stormwater issues relied on a system that was often first-come, first-served. Now, that approach is changing. The Burlington City Council adopted a shift in how it decides which stormwater-related projects receive funding on March 3.
