Students passed by the old Main Bell in the Alamance building as they made their way to New Student Convocation. Over 1,600 freshmen and 70 transfer students from 43 states and 23 countries sat in the rows of chairs, Under the Oaks, where convocation took place for the first time since 2019.

In Elon University’s East Neighborhood, the incoming class of 2025 freshmen were greeted with lively festivities including music, orientation leaders and more.
Freshman and international student Johnny Zhu couldn’t help but laugh at the mention of new student orientation. As the incoming class of 2025 spent the day moving boxes, unpacking dorms and meeting roommates, some international students in the Colonnades and Danieley neighborhoods, like Zhu, were already ahead.
The freshman housing experience is often either a treasured or terrible memory for many college students, and it’s where students begin to find their first sense of community on campus. Elon University has eight residential neighborhoods, five of which are open to freshmen. These neighborhoods boast varying themes and traditions, creating the opportunity for students to bond and connect with one another.
Students and families arriving in the Global Neighborhood for move-in day were greeted on Friday by orientation leaders like Adams, resident assistants and older students eager to assist them with getting settled into their new dorms.

From leading new students to their first residential neighborhood meeting to attending the hypnotist event together at Rhodes Stadium, orientation leaders are one of the first faces incoming students see when they arrive on campus.
President of Elon’s Transfer Student Organization, Claire Quinlivan, said the desire to ease the transition for students sparked discussions with Director of Transfer and Special Admissions James Thurnes and Transfer Student Coordinator and Assistant Director of Academic Advising Rebecca Krylow. The conversations ultimately led to reinstating the TSO in the fall of 2020.

More than 1,600 incoming students will be welcomed into the Elon community to celebrate the beginning of their university academic careers at New Student Convocation on Aug. 21.
In the Elon University women’s soccer season opener against the George Washington University Colonials on Aug. 19, junior forward Molly Mahoney scored the team’s first goal of the season in the 39th minute to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. The team went on to win the match 2-0, with Mahoney’s goal ultimately serving as the game winner.
With the 2021 Elon University women’s soccer season underway, players and coaches alike are preparing for another winning year.
Students with cars parked in residential neighborhoods are asked to move them to alternate locations by 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 19. Faculty and staff are asked to park in the Arts West, Oaks, South Campus and Station at Mill Point lots. Campus roads are partially closed and one-way from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 19.
