Pandemic messes with in-person connections

A key component of every introduction to sociology class is the “looking glass self,” a concept created by American sociologist Charles Horton Cooley. The looking glass self describes how people develop their characters from interactions with others. But due to COVID-19 physical distancing regulations, interactions with others have changed, leaving some to wonder what the long-term impact on mental health and interpersonal relations will be.

Elon University ranks No.88 overall on the U.S. News and World Report 2021 list of best national universities

Elon University ranks No. 88 among national universities and No. 55 among private universities on the U.S. News and World Report 2021 list of best national universities. This ranking is down four spots both overall and for private universities from the 2020 list, when Elon ranked No. 84 and No. 51 一 Elon’s first year of eligibility for the list.

A look inside Elon University's quarantine spaces

Elon University sophomore Bella Roy said she had to go into quarantine after an individual she had been in close contact with tested positive for COVID-19. Roy had a negative test result, but still had to undergo a two-week quarantine. The two-week quarantine period for close contacts are the guidance and directives of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Alamance County Health Department.

Elon Aldermen approve coronavirus relief funds, prepare to open playgrounds

After passing a motion to update the town of Elon’s budget with the coronavirus relief funds, the town of Elon Board of Alderman discussed an increase in sales tax revenue in the month of June, reopening playgrounds and the possibility of a citizen’s advisory committee to town of Elon Police at their September regular session.

Elon University randomly selects hundreds of students, faculty and staff each week for COVID-19 testing

Currently, the random COVID-19 testing for students is being conducted every Wednesday in Alumni Gym while testing for faculty and staff is being done through mail-in tests. Students receive instructions on how to sign-up for a time and more information about what to expect in the email from Stein.

Meals on Wheels delivers hope to Alamance County senior community

March in Greensboro honors Marcus Smith almost two years after his death

On Saturday Sept. 5, protesters marched through the streets of Greensboro in honor of the  upcoming anniversary of the Black man’s death. The event was called the March for Marcus and was put on WHOA: Working Class & Houseless Organizing Alliance — a group that helps promote change for “the working class, homeless, migrant and other disenfranchised communities,” according to the groups Facebook page.

Elon University’s Student Government Association met for a virtual town hall on the issue of diversity, equity and inclusion on campus on Thursday evening. Junior Malia Takei moderated the town hall, which featured Vice President and Associate Provost for Inclusive Excellence Randy Williams,  Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley and Director of the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence Leigh-Anne Royster.
