Students identify issues important to college age voters

This will be the first election many college students will cast a ballot in, and it’s widely considered a monumental election for other reasons as well. As tensions across the country remain high from the COVID-19 pandemic, other concerns regarding Black Lives Matter protests and health care affordability during the pandemic are also defining issues voters currently face.

Elon University to return to social hiatus, expects increase to High Alert

Elon University will return to social hiatus on Oct. 23 due to a recent spike in cases, according to an email update from Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee. Some of the restrictions include prohibiting visitors in on campus housing, closing indoor seating in dining halls and suspending high risk club sports and intramural activities.

Election Board officials weigh in on early, in-person voting

With Election Day quickly approaching and early voting starting last week, Elon University students are gearing up to cast their ballots on or before Nov. 3. 28 million Americans already have voted early. In Alamance County over 21,000 people have voted early according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

North Carolina to extend Phase 3 due to a rise in COVID-19 cases

North Carolina will stay paused in Phase 3 for the next three weeks because of a rise in COVID-19 cases, Gov. Roy Cooper announced in a press briefing today. Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Mandy Cohen said the main causes of this increase have been social and religious gatherings.

Roundtable on pro-Trump caravan makes reccomendations to President Connie Book

The roundtable on the Trump caravan gave its recommendations to Elon University President Connie Book on Oct. 19. The list included 16 different recommendations of action that could be taken to boost campus safety. The group was formed following the pro-Trump caravan, which traveled through campus, and was made up of students, staff and faculty appointed by Book.

3 new coronavirus clusters identified at Elon University

Three additional coronavirus clusters have been identified at Elon University. Two of the clusters are located in freshman dorms, while another was identified in a sorority. According to Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee, the clusters are due to social gatherings.

Thom Tillis and Cal Cunningham battle for North Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat

With 35 of the 100 U.S. Senate seats up for election in 2020, Democrats are looking to unseat incumbent North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis with their candidate Cal Cunningham. Tillis, 60, is seeking his second term in office after defeating then Democrat incumbent Kay Hagan in the 2014 elections.Cunningham, 47, is a former state senator and retired military officer. Throughout his career Cunningham has worked at law firms.

SGA passes resolution supporting Black Lives Matter

Elon University’s Student Government Association passed Senate Resolution 20, which expresses support for the Black Lives Matter movement and adopts eight articles to support marginalized groups on campus.The articles include increasing diversity within SGA, the student body, Elon’s faculty and the Board of Trustees. The resolution also affirms the SGA’s commitment to anti-racism.

Gen. David Thompson, the recently-appointed first vice chief of space operations for the U.S.  Space Force spoke to Residential Officer Training Corps programs across North Carolina during a lecture at North Carolina A&T State University on Thursday.

East Haggard to be closed for Homecoming Weekend

East Haggard Avenue will be closed this weekend from noon on Saturday, Oct. 17 through noon on Sunday, Oct. 18 for Homecoming Weekend, according to a press release from the town of Elon. This decision comes after Elon University submitted a revised proposal to the town of Elon asking the town to close Haggard for Homecoming as well as election week.

COVID-19 cluster linked to freshman dorm

Elon University reported 17 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. In an email to students, faculty and staff, chair of the Ready & Resilient Committee Jeff Stein said the spike in cases is related to a freshman residence hall. The Alamance County Health Department is reporting the cases as a cluster at East Neighborhood Building A residence hall. The outbreak has been traced to the first floor.

Voters face long lines at the polls for early voting

Today is the first day of early voting in North Carolina. Hundreds of voters have been lining up at Holly Hill Mall,the closest early voting location to Elon University of the five different locations in Alamance County. Voters began lining up around the building before 8 a.m. to get to the polling place within the mall.
