The National Labor Relations Board ruled in favor of Elon University non-tenure track faculty members’ right to form a union on Feb.19. This decision ends the year-long legal back-and-forth between the university and the faculty union, Elon Faculty Forward.

Elon University expenses exceeded projections during fall semester

Elon University spent more money than anticipated during the fall semester due to pandemic related costs, according to Provost Aswani Volety. Representatives of the university did not say how much was planned for in the annual budget or how much more it spent than anticipated during the fall semester. Among the expenses were COVID-19 tests, cleaning supplies and the personal protection equipment required to open campus safely.

Alamance NAACP spearheads effort to rename park after Black councilman slain in 1870

Almost 151 years ago on Feb. 26, 1870, members of the Ku Klux Klan kidnapped Wyatt Outlaw in the middle of the night, and his body was found the next morning hanging from an elm tree near the courthouse. 18 men were indicted for his death, but the charges were dropped. Now in 2021, the Alamance County NAACP is trying to memorialize Outlaw and the lynching that took place over a century ago.

Winter storm cancels weekly COVID-19 testing leaving some students feeling uncertain

Elon University is closed today, and antigen testing, as part of COVID-19 testing, has been canceled. Testing remains mandatory, and students will be contacted about rescheduling their appointments Friday or Saturday, depending on the effects of the storm. Today’s testing was suspended following the cancelation of university operations after the National Weather Service in Raleigh issued a winter storm advisory for Alamance County until 7 a.m. Friday.

Elon student essential workers get COVID-19 vaccines

Some Elon University students have received the COVID-19 vaccines as essential workers. Junior Caroline Wolfe and Senior Lindsay Barclay were offered the vaccines as Emergency Medical Technicians. Both students jumped at the opportunity to get vaccinated to slow the spread of the virus.

Twin Lakes Retirement Community vaccinates staff and residents

Twin Lakes has been able to administer over 800 doses of the vaccine. All but one of the residents in their Memory Care facility, a state-certified program for adults with dementia, are now fully vaccinated. Prior to their appointment, the administration completes the scheduling, forms and screenings for the residents.

In the first business meeting of the new semester, Elon University student government representatives discussed the status of COVID-19 at the university as the campus moves to Level 2 — High Alert on Feb. 11, and voted to override a vetoed bill that would allow students studying abroad to run for senate.

Elon School of Education has hosted ‘white caucus’ since fall, now faces backlash

Elon University’s School of Education planned to host, for the second semester in a row, a “white caucus” for “white-identifying” education majors or minors. As of Feb. 10, the program has been canceled. The program, which had the goal to explore race and systemic oppression in education, comes after a summer of protests against racial injustice.

Elon University narrows down 2021 commencement plans

The school has announced three potential formats for commencement: a fully virtual option with no in-person gatherings, an in-person ceremony with a limited number of guests that would be live-streamed and an in-person ceremony for students only that would be live-streamed for all others. A final decision for the format is expected to be announced no later than March 26.

Weekly COVID-19 testing gives some students security during pandemic

Elon students weigh staying home for spring semester

The academic experience — all-nighters in the library, lab experiments, class field trips and connecting with professors during office hours — are all aspects of in-person instruction that have been redesigned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, students are adjusting to an online learning environment as virtual instruction has become widely prevalent in the education process over the past 11 months.

Daniel J. Watts selected as Elon 2021 commencement speaker

He presented his background, leadership philosophy, their vision for campus policing and the challenges and opportunities in campus policing to students, faculty and staff, as part of the fifth and final stage of the interview process.

Alamance County Commissioners approve 25,000 square foot COVID-19 vaccine site

The approval of the indoor space comes after Tony Lo Giudice, the Alamance County health director, told the board that the county’s demand for COVID-19 vaccinations is growing. The new indoor vaccination site will help with the county’s growing demand and is set to be leased for at least 3 months starting Feb. 1. The lease cost for the space will be $23,958.33 per month and can be renewed on a monthly basis

Elon University commencement plans in flux

According to a university spokesman, there is currently no timeline for making a decision regarding commencement for the class of 2021. But Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee, said right now, the university is planning for both the possibility of commencement happening or not — for both the class of 2020 and 2021. He said it would be “foolish” of them to make a decision now, but hopes to alert students and families of a decision by March.
