Police responded to fight, gunshots outside bar

According to the crime alert, at 12:44 a.m. police responded to a call about a fight at the pub. Before the police arrived at the pub, warning shots were fired into the air to disperse the fight. No one was injured.

Environmental science class pairs with Haw River Project

With the ongoing climate change crisis and pollution of the Earth, Kelsey Bitting, assistant professor of environmental studies wants her students to be part of the solution. As a part of her ENS 111, Introduction to Environmental Science class, Bitting is pairing up with The Clean Haw River Project to engage students by creating visual presentations — such as greeting graphics, articles and research presentations — that will immediately go toward helping The Clean Haw River Project’s cause.

Academic Advising apologizes after disclosing some students’ federally protected information

The office of Academic Advising has apologized for disclosing federally protected student information. The office sent an email to students considered “at risk” during midterm evaluations, failing to blind copy recipients in a mass email. This incident violates the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act or FERPA, which prohibits the disclosure of personal educational records.

North Carolina NAACP files lawsuit to remove Confederate monument in Graham

Alamance County is up against a lawsuit over the Confederate soldier’s monument in Graham. The North Carolina NAACP and other advocacy groups filed the lawsuit in Alamance County Superior Court Tuesday, March 30 to have the monument removed.The state and local NAACP, Engage Alamance, Down Home North Carolina and five residents of Alamance County have filed the lawsuit against the County Commissioners to remove the Confederate monument.

Women coaches underrepresented at Elon, Division I sports

In the last 50 years, the number of female athletes in college sports dramatically increased. However, women coaches are now more underrepresented in women’s college sports. Currently at Elon, approximately 26% of non-volunteer coaches are women 一 double counting for coaches who are on staff with multiple teams. Female collegiate coaches have not always been underrepresented in women’s sports. The trend started when Title IX 一 a law, which prohibits federally funded institutions from discriminating on the basis of sex 一 was enacted in 1972 and greatly increased representation of female athletes.

SGA executive president hopes to tackle initiatives on behalf of student body

Jack Corby, the newly sworn-in executive president of the Student Government Association, plans to tackle initiatives on communication, diversity and connecting the campus community that he promised in his campaign. During his term, Corby said some of his main priorities are centered around advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and overcoming the disconnect students have felt in regard to the university’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Elon University schedules campus vaccine clinics as town eases COVID-19 restrictions

Elon’s first wave of on-campus vaccine rollout quickly followed Gov. Roy Cooper’s March 23 announcement that announced the expansion of vaccine eligibility and eased North Carolina COVID-19 restrictions are being eased. However, the town of Elon gathering limits are stricter than the state's.

LeMire entered the field 28 years ago after he was inspired in high school by his uncle, who worked for the Chicago Police Department. A year into pandemic, professor mental health suffers

Professor of psychology CJ Fleming — who specializes in clinical psychology and mental health — said she has noticed two main things when considering professors’ mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: fatigue and capacity for working memory. She said fatigue is probably what has affected her most, since she has had to reformat many of her consistently taught classes to fit an online or hybrid format.

'It genuinely broke my heart': Elon community denounces anti-Asian hate in the U.S.

Over the past year, the United States has witnessed an increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans. The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University-San Bernardino reported data showing a 149% spike of anti-Asian violence in 16 of America’s largest cities. A 21-year-old white male took the lives of eight victims six of whom were women of Asian descent.

Town of Elon increases gathering limits effective immediately

The town of Elon announced on March 26 that it will increase gatherings both indoor and outdoor gathering limits.In a press release, the town said indoor gathering limits will increase from 10 to 25 and outdoor gathering limits will increase from 25 to 50 effective Friday at 5 p.m.

Elon University to have in-person commencement for class of 2021

Elon University announced they will host an in-person ceremony for the class of 2021 with a limited number of guests being allowed to attend. Students will receive at least two guest tickets, according to an email from Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient Committee. Commencement is set for Friday, May 21.

Pandemic cuts student activity fee allocations

Elon University students paid $146 each semester in student activity fees in 2020-21 tuition, a price determined by the board of trustees. However, the allocation of these fees by the Student Government Association has been handled differently due to the coronavirus pandemic and an increase in virtual settings.

SGA swears in 2021-22 executive board, awards senators

Elon University’s 2020-21 Student Government Association held its final senate dinner to celebrate the end of their term.The dinner included senate awards, swearing-in of the executive board for the 2021-2022 school year, a speech from Associate Vice President for Student Life Jana Lynn Patterson honoring the outgoing seniors and an open mic for those who wanted to speak.

Disabilities Resources continues to provide aid amid pandemic

The abrupt changes brought on by the pandemic have highlighted the importance of Elon’s Disabilities Resources Office to disabled students. Susan Wise, director of Disabilities Resources at Elon University, said that she and her three-person staff worked to ensure consistency in accommodations to those who relied on its support during the pandemic.

Chloe Yoon wins SGA executive vice president runoff election

Chloe Yoon has been elected as executive vice president of Elon University’s Student Government Association. Yoon, a junior secondary english education major, won by 67% of the vote in the runoff election. 975 votes were cast in the election. Yoon’s campaign was centered around diversity, equity and inclusion, which was highlighted by her campaign slogan, “affirming that everyone at Elon can bELONg.”

Elon University set to distribute COVID-19 vaccines this Saturday

Elon University will begin administering Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines to students, faculty and staff on campus this Saturday by appointment, according to an email sent to those eligible to receive the vaccine. Any faculty and staff working in person or students with a qualifying medical condition have been notified if they are eligible to sign up for the vaccine.

‘It was very depressing’: Alamance Regional workers reflect on a year of treating COVID-19 patients

Fewer than 10 Alamance County residents had tested positive for COVID-19 on March 22, 2020. Since then, there have been more than 16,000 positive cases in the county and 237 people have died, according to data from the state health department. One year later, frontline staff at Alamance Regional said they are tired, anxious and traumatized.
