Tony Award-winning actor BD Wong shared his experiences as both an Asian American and gay man for Elon University’s speaker series on Jan. 11. Wong served as the Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative address speaker.

Elon university faces challenges of new variant

Elon University had 87 total active cases among students and 54 among faculty and staff as of Jan. 9, according to the Healthy Elon COVID-19 dashboard. This compares to seven new cases on campus reported in the weekly Healthy Elon update of the semester, Dec. 8, 2021, just one month earlier.

Elon University requires students to receive COVID-19 booster

Elon University will require all students to receive and upload documentation of a COVID-19 booster vaccination by Jan. 31, 2022, or within seven days of being eligible to receive the booster, according to an email from Healthy Elon Committee Chair Jeff Stein. The email recommended that students try to get booster shots before Winter Term classes begin on Jan. 4, 2022.

Many students get their off-campus housing passed down to them through organizations or other students, and as the fall semester is coming to an end, students are beginning to look for 2022-23 housing. But this year, some students are struggling to find what’s left of the off-campus housing options.

Memorial service at Elon University honors 'silent teachers'

To honor the university’s silent teachers, a memorial service is held at the end of every semester in the spirit of reflecting on all that was accomplished with the help of each donor. The fall 2021 memorial service was held in Numen Lumen on Thursday, Dec. 2 and was open to professors, students and family of the silent teachers to attend.

How local food banks prepared for Thanksgiving holiday

Campus Kitchen, an Elon University organization works with students, Elon Dining, Loy Farm and Allied Churches of Alamance County. According to Feeding America, Alamance County had a 13.7% food insecurity rate in 2019, which is how local organizations measure the  lack of consistent access to food.

Florence study abroad program sees increased enrollment

According to Bill Burress, director of study abroad at Elon University, programs like Florence, Italy have seen an increase in enrollment because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a normal semester, Burress said programs are limited to no more than 80 students, but this year, that’s changed.
