Burlington local opens beauty salon in Elon

The hair and beauty bar opened in January 2021. But the growth of an Elon student clientele had been slow until the last few weeks, according to Ashley Waddell. Waddell traded her stethoscope and scrubs in for scissors and style when she opened Brushed Hair + Beauty Bar. The salon is located next to Fat Froggs Bar off of West Haggard Avenue less than a mile from Elon’s campus.

Senior dance majors to showcase thesis in three-part film

Inspiritus Dance Company is premiering its three-part dance film collection titled “To Be Continued” on April 10 at 6:30 p.m. The event will be streamed on YouTube, and viewers can access the link on the company’s website at 6:00 p.m. before the performance.

Environmental science class pairs with Haw River Project

With the ongoing climate change crisis and pollution of the Earth, Kelsey Bitting, assistant professor of environmental studies wants her students to be part of the solution. As a part of her ENS 111, Introduction to Environmental Science class, Bitting is pairing up with The Clean Haw River Project to engage students by creating visual presentations — such as greeting graphics, articles and research presentations — that will immediately go toward helping The Clean Haw River Project’s cause.

Baseball season off to 'inconsistent' start

Elon head baseball coach Mike Kennedy described their season thus far as “inconsistent.”Currently, the team has a 7-13 record overall and is 1-2 in conference play. The team lost on March 26 to then No. 8 East Carolina 15-0. The Phoenix then returned to play against the Pirates the next day, beating them 2-1— it was Elon’s first win against at top 10 ranked team since 2013.

Academic Advising apologizes after disclosing some students’ federally protected information

The office of Academic Advising has apologized for disclosing federally protected student information. The office sent an email to students considered “at risk” during midterm evaluations, failing to blind copy recipients in a mass email. This incident violates the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act or FERPA, which prohibits the disclosure of personal educational records.

Elon Performing Arts showcases Medea with a modern twist

Traditional stage actors thrive off a live audience’s energy, but in Elon Performing Arts’ adaptation of Euripides’ Medea, the actors never come face-to-face with a live audience. Despite the unconventional approach to the Ancient Greek tragedy, the performance went on in a digital and prerecorded format.

Elon spring football: A tale of two quarterbacks

Since Week 3, Elon has been rotating back and forth at quarterback between freshman JR Martin and redshirt freshman Justin Allen. Martin has appeared in four games for Elon, recording a team-high 396 passing yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Allen, meanwhile, has recorded 290 passing yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in three games played.

North Carolina NAACP files lawsuit to remove Confederate monument in Graham

Alamance County is up against a lawsuit over the Confederate soldier’s monument in Graham. The North Carolina NAACP and other advocacy groups filed the lawsuit in Alamance County Superior Court Tuesday, March 30 to have the monument removed.The state and local NAACP, Engage Alamance, Down Home North Carolina and five residents of Alamance County have filed the lawsuit against the County Commissioners to remove the Confederate monument.

Women coaches underrepresented at Elon, Division I sports

In the last 50 years, the number of female athletes in college sports dramatically increased. However, women coaches are now more underrepresented in women’s college sports. Currently at Elon, approximately 26% of non-volunteer coaches are women 一 double counting for coaches who are on staff with multiple teams. Female collegiate coaches have not always been underrepresented in women’s sports. The trend started when Title IX 一 a law, which prohibits federally funded institutions from discriminating on the basis of sex 一 was enacted in 1972 and greatly increased representation of female athletes.

Playing with fire: Elon's only feature twirler

Growing up, many children are warned not to play with fire. But Elon University junior Jill Ford did just the opposite. Ford has a position in Elon’s “Fire of the Carolinas” marching band dancing with batons as the school’s feature twirler. Throughout her performances Ford can be seen simultaneously twirling up to three — sometimes flaming — batons.

SGA executive president hopes to tackle initiatives on behalf of student body

Jack Corby, the newly sworn-in executive president of the Student Government Association, plans to tackle initiatives on communication, diversity and connecting the campus community that he promised in his campaign. During his term, Corby said some of his main priorities are centered around advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and overcoming the disconnect students have felt in regard to the university’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Suspension of Broadway leaves Elon music theatre majors in limbo

When seniors in Elon’s music theatre department began college, no one expected in four years to graduate into a stagnant job market, after more than a year of virtual performances. Music theatre students have not only adjusted to physically classes and the loss of live theater, but program seniors seeking post-graduate employment are facing an additional burden — the shutdown of Broadway.

Tiny Dorm documents Elon music scene

Tiny Dorm concerts are filmed in co-founder and Elon senior Brendan Steuart’s apartment. He grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and said he enjoys driving past the NPR studios where NPR Music hosts the Tiny Desk video concert series. Knowing how many famous artists had made an appearance on Tiny Desk led to Steuart to create his own version on a more local level.

Q&A with Joseph LeMire, Elon University’s new chief of campus security and police

Joseph LeMire began his new role as Elon University’s new chief of campus safety and police on March 29. LeMire entered the field 28 years ago after he was inspired in high school by his uncle, who worked for the Chicago Police Department. Elon News Network spoke with LeMire about his plans for his first days on campus, his thoughts on the mutual aid agreement and how he will connect with the Elon community.

Elon football game postponed due to COVID-19 related protocols

Elon University’s football game against William & Mary on April 3  has been postponed due to “COVID-19 related protocols,” according to a press release from the Colonial Athletic Association. In a previous interview with Elon News Network, CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said schools would be able to make their own decisions regarding opting out of game play.

Blended Nutrition & Energy Smoothie and Juice Bar has opened its second store in the Elon area located on Timberline Station Road. Marvin decided to start her business in order to inspire others.

Elon minor champions intersectional feminism

The minor, initially called Women’s Studies, was developed and introduced at Elon in 1988 by professors Martha Smith and Seena Granowsky, who were inspired to found the program after attending a conference at Duke University on Women’s Studies programs, according to Elon University archives. Since 1988, the minor has served as an interdisciplinary analysis of women’s issues.

A year into pandemic, professor mental health suffers

Professor of psychology CJ Fleming — who specializes in clinical psychology and mental health — said she has noticed two main things when considering professors’ mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: fatigue and capacity for working memory. She said fatigue is probably what has affected her most, since she has had to reformat many of her consistently taught classes to fit an online or hybrid format.

Students struggle to get Campus Recreation reservations during pandemic

The policies implemented by Campus Rec to ensure a safe environment during the pandemic have created other problems for students. While the new measures are compliant with Ready & Resilient and North Carolina safety guidelines, many students are frustrated with the limited availability as a result of the new policies.
