HBO Go accounts for on-campus Elon residents

One of the many resources Elon students have access to on-campus is HBO Go. Ever since Campus Technology switched Elon's television service to Philo, students have had the ability to create an account with the online streaming service for free.

STAFF EDITORIAL: Break out of your own communities within Elon

It is far too easy to remain comfortable here at Elon University. It is too easy for students to stay in their well-constructed comfort zones — constantly hanging out with the same groups of people, attending the same events and sharing the same ideas to the same willing listeners. Students complain about the monotony of living on a resident campus and our university’s lack of diversity, but it is necessary to remember the role students themselves have in making their time at Elon more interesting. While the university could still do more in terms of diversity initiatives, there is no shortage of opportunities for students to hear new perspectives or try new things on campus — students just need to be willing to go out and search for them. It is important to find a sense of community or home on campus, but these communities shouldn't cage students and keep them branching out and appreciating all sides of campus life.

Sexual Assault Awareness month starts conversations

April marks the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and many different organizations have joined together for the cause, including the Department of Health Promotion, SPARKS peer education, Elon Feminists, I Am That Girl, the Iota Psi chapter of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, One Love, CrossRoads Sexual Assault Response & Resource Center and Family Abuse Services.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
