Multi-faith scholars spark conversation

Sophomore Sophie Zinn considers herself as the person in her friend group that is constantly encouraging others to talk about religion, a subject that she is very passionate about and that she believes is not talked about as much. Grading the greek effect: The effects of Greek affiliation on academic performance

A study published last month in the Economics of Education Review journal titled “The effects of Greek affiliation on academic performance,” quantified and analyzed the effects of fraternity and sorority affiliation on academic performance, and the results are applicable to Elon University. The study occurred at Duke University, which has a deferred recruitment policy similar to Elon’s.

There are 5,189 miles between Elon, North Carolina, and Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The time difference is 4 hours, and Abidjan has a population of 4.7 million, about 4.69 million more people than there are in the town of Elon.

Racism prompts Elon professor to return to Canada

Robin Attas, assistant professor of music, will be leaving Elon University and moving back to Canada with her husband, Nicolás Soza, and their two children. Sozq said he has been enduring acts of racism ever since the couple moved to North Carolina in 2013.

Former Sigma Phi Epsilon president used racial slur toward black student

Elon University junior Owen Gaffney, former president of the NC Mu Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, used a racial slur toward a black Elon senior, according to multiple sources close to the situation. According to junior William Ellick, current president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Gaffney and senior Austin Meekins, who is black, had a disagreement at an off-campus fraternity party over academic standards with Gaffney, who is white. While Meekins was outside the party, which took place the weekend of April 13, Gaffney indirectly called Meekins the N-word after he had left Gaffney's vicinity.

Phoenix concludes spring scrimmage with newfound intensity

The Elon University football team concluded its final spring scrimmage on a very hot and humid Saturday afternoon, with 20, 40-yard sprints. Midway through, new head coach Curt Cignitti stopped the players and gathered them for a quick kneel-down before colorfully yelling at his team for their effort. It’s been a part of the new level of intensity the former University of Alabama coach has tried to bring to an Elon football team that is coming off a disappointing 2-9 season. “He was just telling us if we want to change the culture around here, we have to change what we do right now,” said junior offensive lineman Alex Higgins.

BENSON: Get off campus to break the Elon bubble

Everyone in attendance here at Elon is familiar with the concept of the “Elon bubble” and all that it entails — the idea that students at this university find themselves sticking around on the weekends, attending the same parties, having breakfast at the same dining hall and going to bed at the same time Sunday night to do the whole monotonous week again. But here’s a shocker — you don’t have to be victim to the same routine time and time again.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
