Elon University students react to death of Queen Elizabeth II

British monarch Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday. She was 96. Doctors had placed the queen under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland Sept. 8 after they became concerned about her health, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.

The College Poster Sale Company runs annual back to school poster sales at universities across the country and will be at Elon University until Sept. 9. Students can head to the Koury Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pick up posters. 

Faucette House on East Trollinger Avenue sold

The 100-year-old building sits across the tracks next to the post office—it looks like a house, but it functions as an office building. It’s called the Faucette House, and it has been sold. The four tenants who run businesses inside the house have to move out by the beginning of October. 

38 students receive citations from town of Elon police

Since Sept. 2, the town of Elon has charged 20 students with underage drinking and 18 for open container violations.

Since President Joe Biden announced his plan to provide $10,000 in debt cancellation for millions of Americans and up to $10,000 more for people with great financial need, there have been spam calls targeting people with student loans. Elon University’s Director of Information Security Gary Sheehan explained how to avoid scams, what to do if you receive a scam and ways to report these scams.

Class of 2026 campaigns for Elon University Student Government Association

Applications for Elon University’s Student Government Association closed on Sept. 5, officially kicking off the freshmen SGA elections. SGA elections will take place Sept. 12, and all freshmen are eligible to vote for their representatives on Phoenix Connect. 

Elon University welcomes five new minors

All minors are available this fall and are aimed to foster interdisciplinary studies, ranging from foreign languages to nutrition. Each minor can be applied to many interests and majors offered.

Elon University women’s soccer shuts out UNC Asheville

The Elon University women’s soccer team won dominantly against the University of North Carolina-Asheville Bulldogs 4-0 at Rudd Field, bringing the Phoenix back to .500 (2-2-1) and ending a three-game winless streak for the team.

Elon University men’s soccer loses conference opener to Northeastern

The home opener for the Elon University men’s soccer team against the Northeastern University Huskies was a ferocious battle that featured physical play, 23 fouls, eight yellow cards and two red cards, as the Phoenix lost its Colonial Athletic Association opener 2-1. 

Elon University football loses season opener in Music City

After a storm delayed the start of the game, the Elon University football team kicked off its 2022-23 season against the Vanderbilt University Commodores at FirstBank Stadium. The Phoenix lost 42-31 in a tight battle. 

New proposed changes to Title IX adds protection

Title IX serves to protect against gender discrimination in any program that receives federal funding, including schools. It was established in 1972, and a person’s right to have an abortion was established in 1973 in the ruling of the Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade.
