Elon students start podcast on gender, sexuality

Junior Mac Lengyel and other students at Elon University’s Gender and LGBTQIA Center recently started the podcast SexualiTEA. The podcast focuses on discussing the intricacies of gender and sexuality along with sharing the stories of Elon students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Elon student honored for song about social justice

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Foundation awarded Elon junior Eliza Spear the 2020 Jay Gorney Award along with co-writers Lindsay Gitter and Rachael Williams for their song “If I Don’t Try.” The award is given to a songwriting team or songwriter, who is not affiliated with a label, for their original work and is handed out based on the song’s social implications, according to the ASCAP Foundation.

SGA passes resolution supporting Black Lives Matter

Elon University’s Student Government Association passed Senate Resolution 20, which expresses support for the Black Lives Matter movement and adopts eight articles to support marginalized groups on campus.The articles include increasing diversity within SGA, the student body, Elon’s faculty and the Board of Trustees. The resolution also affirms the SGA’s commitment to anti-racism.

East Haggard to be closed for Homecoming Weekend

East Haggard Avenue will be closed this weekend from noon on Saturday, Oct. 17 through noon on Sunday, Oct. 18 for Homecoming Weekend, according to a press release from the town of Elon. This decision comes after Elon University submitted a revised proposal to the town of Elon asking the town to close Haggard for Homecoming as well as election week.

COVID-19 cluster linked to freshman dorm

Elon University reported 17 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. In an email to students, faculty and staff, chair of the Ready & Resilient Committee Jeff Stein said the spike in cases is related to a freshman residence hall. The Alamance County Health Department is reporting the cases as a cluster at East Neighborhood Building A residence hall. The outbreak has been traced to the first floor.

Voters face long lines at the polls for early voting

Today is the first day of early voting in North Carolina. Hundreds of voters have been lining up at Holly Hill Mall,the closest early voting location to Elon University of the five different locations in Alamance County. Voters began lining up around the building before 8 a.m. to get to the polling place within the mall.

North Carolina, Alamance County voting trends in presidential elections

In nine of the past ten presidential elections, the Republican party candidate has won the state of North Carolina. President Barack Obama was the lone Democrat to take the state when he won it by 0.32% in 2008. Michael Bitzer, who runs the political blog Old North State Politics and is a professor of politics and history at Catawba University, saw a shift in the state.

CAA announces adjusted basketball schedule

For Elon, both opening games will be on Jan. 2 against Northeastern, with the men traveling to Boston and the women remaining home. The regular season will conclude Feb. 28. Non-conference games have not been released, as well as ticket and seating information.

Elon University restarts search for director of campus safety and chief of police

Elon University restarted the search for a new chief of police and director of campus safety this fall. The position — which has been open since January — became available after the previous EUPD director, Dennis Franks, stepped down to become the police chief of Stallings, North Carolina. Doug Dotson currently serves as interim director. The search has restarted, and the university is using the search firm Developmental Associates.

A look at Elon's devoted beekeeper

Elon University senior Megan Noor is in search of a new caretaker for the bees she’s helped manage the last three years. Noor, who spent the spring taking care of bees, has been interested in bees ever since she joined took a class with the Alamance County Beekeepers Association her freshman year.

Elon University Spring Break uncertain

Depending on how the coronavirus has progressed in 2021, Elon University may have to re-evaluate whether students, faculty and staff will have a traditional or modified spring break. As of now, according to senior administration at the university, how spring break will be conducted is undecided. It is currently listed on the university's academic calendar as the traditional one week off.

Rep. Ted Budd and Navy veteran Scott Huffman face off in U.S. House 13th District race

Two-term U.S. Rep. Ted Budd, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Scott Huffman, a Navy veteran and small business owner, to represent North Carolina’s 13th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Budd was first elected in 2016 — winning 56% of the vote — and won reelection in 2018. Huffman has never held public office, and this is his first time running.

Election Center: Candidate profiles for the March 3 primary

Primary elections will be held March 3 in North Carolina. The Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate will be on the ballot. The winners of these races will face off in November during the general election for the open North Carolina Senate seat. Another race on the Republican ballot is Alamance County Sheriff, with incumbent Terry Johnson being challenged by two candidates. Other races for Board of County Commissioners, County Clerk of Superior Court and North Carolina Appeals Seat 1 are also on the ballot.

Elon University students find community through faith

Through a variety of faith-based organizations, Elon University students are finding ways to remain connected to their beliefs while balancing coursework and extracurricular commitments. The Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life is used by students on campus to explore different religious worldviews and identities.
