Elon University Belk Library hosts African American Literature Read-In

Students gathered at Elon University’s Belk Library on Feb. 17 to share poetry and prose with the Elon community —turning literature into an opportunity for expression during Black History Month. The event opened with a reading from assistant professor of English Dan Burns, who shared an excerpt from “The Nickel Boys”. He chose the book knowing that he was about to head over to Global Neighbourhood for a film screening of the movie adaptation.

Forever chemical found in well at Eli Whitney Fire Department

The Eli Whitney Fire Department released a press release saying that PFAS scientifically known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, were found in the water supply from its well. The discovery came after tests were conducted as part of the statewide firefighting research program passed by the legislature in 2023. As part of this program, the North Carolina Collaboratory tested water wells at 411 rural fire stations across North Carolina.

Local Black-owned businesses promote relationships, fill needs in community

When clients visit Crown Slayer Salon in downtown Gibsonville, they go for more than just the hairstyles. Owner and stylist Bonita Garner works to provide everyone who sits down in her chair an outlet to talk, ask for advice or just connect. Together they form a relationship that is more than just stylist and client, but one of openness and mutual trust.

Brandon Enoch’s Trail for Green Level widens

A long road led Brandon Enoch to become the town administrator of Green Level, a role assumed at the beginning of this year. He first worked in Green Level as the parks and recreation director. Now, he wants to bring the Green Level Woodland Trail, adventure tourism and a higher tax base to the town.

Elon University ranks 9th for on-campus technological integration

Elon University is ranked the ninth best high-tech college campus by University Magazine, a publication that reports news about colleges and universities to inform students and prospective students. It is the highest ranking high-tech campus in the state of North Carolina, above Duke University at twelfth.

Ground breaks on biggest investment project in Burlington history

The ground officially broke Feb. 16 at the new distribution center location for Ahold Delhaize USA, the parent company of the grocery store chain, Food Lion. Located near the border of Alamance and Guilford counties, construction has begun on the $860 million project.

Elon alum details the experiences of fatherhood in children's book ‘We Love you ForAva!’

For Jeffrey and Corddarryl Williamson-Rose, adoption was an option they were considering months before their wedding. They debated other ways to grow their family, but after getting married in September 2022, they began the adoption process. The Williamson-Roses’ adoption journey began with a home study, a procedure where a social worker ensures the parents hoping to adopt are fit to care for and provide for a child.

Online apparel store files to dissolve after Elon trademark infringement lawsuit

Elon University has filed a federal lawsuit against a Washington-based online apparel seller, alleging that it is infringing on its trademarks. After the suit was filed by Elon on Feb. 11, the company began the process of winding down operations on Feb. 13, according to articles of dissolution filed with the Washington Secretary of State.

Elon University Truitt Center hosts Ripple Interfaith Conference for 10th year

The Elon University Truitt Center hosted its annual weekend-long Ripple Interfaith conference from Feb.13 to Feb. 15 in Numen Lumen, where students and visitors from other colleges, such as Queens University of Charlotte and Texas Christian University, were able to participate in various activities, such as an art project and attend breakout sessions happening around Elon University’s campus.

Former Elon professor files wrongful termination lawsuit against university

Former Elon professor of accounting Ray Knight has filed a federal lawsuit against Elon University, alleging the university retaliated against him for whistleblowing, wrongfully denied him tenure, wrongfully terminated his employment and violated both federal whistleblower protections and North Carolina public policy. The lawsuit was filed Feb. 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Mother, daughter continue family legacy in Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated

Cameko Proctor did not always know whether her daughter, Elon senior Maleah Proctor, would join Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. For both women, Maleah’s membership was more than crossing into a Divine Nine organization. It was a family legacy, passed down through generations.

In just three weeks in January, Elon professor of sociology Raj Ghoshal takes his students through 500 years of history, focusing on the Black freedom struggle. Ghoshal said his course, SOC 3300: The Long Civil Rights Movement, helps students recognize the longevity of the fight for civil rights.

Southeast Alamance High School remains undefeated with senior night win

The Southeast Alamance High School girl’s basketball team kept its undefeated season alive with a 54-44 victory over the Eastern Alamance Eagles on Senior Night. The teams entered the game having won 22 and 17 games, respectively. Throughout the first three quarters, the Eagles managed to keep pace with Southeast Alamance until the Stallions used a 12-6 fourth quarter to pull away.

Elon University leadership fellows connect to history during Disarming Injustice course

Each year, the sophomore cohort for the Elon Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows takes a trip to Alabama during the Winter Term, visiting places with deep American history and relevance, including landmarks of the Civil Rights Movement such as the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

Campbell said understanding how we got here is essential for finding a way to live in a society that is free from racial terror.

For Lex Silbiger, that was the trek he and his family took when he was 6 years old. On Feb. 12, Alexander “Lex” Silbiger spoke to Elon University students, staff and community members as part of the Holocaust Remembrance Day Speaker Series.
