Alamance County Commissioner and Elon University alum John Paisley Jr. ’70, R, has died.
Paisley served on the commission consecutively since 2020 and previously served in 2014. In addition to serving on the county commission, Paisley served as a chairman on the Alamance County Board of Elections, on the Alamance and Caswell Mental Health Board and as President of the North Carolina Board of Elections Chairman's Association.
Alamance County Commission vice chair Steve Carter said he was sad to hear of Paisley’s passing.
“Just always known him to be a traditional Southern gentleman,” Carter said.
Paisley’s term was not set to end until 2028.
To fill Paisley’s spot on the commission, Carter said it will be up to the Republican Party to call their Executive Committee to a session to appoint a replacement. Carter said that whoever is appointed to fill Paisley's position will have to run in the upcoming election season.
Carter said that even when he and Paisley disagreed on the commission, they were always friends.
“The last thing I did was about two weeks ago, I went over and borrowed some of his poles for my banner signs,” Carter said. “I checked up on him, and I hated I waited, I hated it was two weeks since I last talked to him.”
