What to know ahead of Elon men’s basketball CAA championship game

Elon men’s basketball faces off against Drexel tonight in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game. If the Phoenix win, they’ll head to the NCAA March Madness tournament for the first time in program history. The winning team will also be crowned CAA champions, which would be another first for Elon’s program. If they lose, their season will be over.

Studying abroad amid COVID-19 pandemic

Elon University junior Heeba Chergui was studying abroad in Jordan last spring when she and many other students across the globe were sent home at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Determined to get her full experience abroad, Chergui is currently in Jordan for the second time. However, study abroad programs were not guaranteed for Elon students during the 2020-21 academic year.

Elon advances to first-ever CAA final with win over Hofstra

The Elon men’s basketball team advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association tournament final Monday night for the first time in school history after beating 4th-seed Hofstra University in a 76-58 semifinal win. Next up for the Phoenix is a finals clash with the winner of the Drexel/Northeastern game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.

Redesigning Elon University's bias reporting system

The working group to design the Elon University bias response system has begun to hold listening sessions with students, faculty and staff. The sessions will allow university community members and those who receive bias reports to provide feedback before a preliminary report is delivered to vice presidents Jon Dooley and Randy Williams on April 15.

Elon tops no. 1 seed James Madison, advances to CAA semifinals

The Elon men’s basketball team advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association tournament semifinals for the second straight season after beating top seed James Madison University in a 72-71 quarterfinal win. The Phoenix, seeded eight in the conference tournament, now move to a 9-8 record on the season, as James Madison, the one seed, drops to 13-7.

Elon University's proposed amendment to mutual aid agreement leaves law enforcement agencies wary

Elon University’s proposed amendment to the 2021 Annual Alamance County Mutual Aid Agreement between local law enforcement groups was rejected by those agencies, leading the university to use “direct communication” regarding aid requests instead. House said the committee decided that communication with law enforcement agencies regarding mutual aid requests is how the university will address issues within the agreement.

Elon falls to James Madison in football conference opener

Elon University football struggled to maintain their lead, resulting in a 20-17 loss against James Madison University in their first conference matchup of the season. Freshman and third-string quarterback JR Martin made his season debut as the third string quarterback, due to the first and second string both being out for injuries.

North Carolina, Alamance County work to bridge digital divide during remote learning

Remote and online work has been the reality for teachers and students in Alamance County for the past 11 months, and even as the county returns to in-person learning, three out of five school days will be remote. For some kids, accessing the internet isn’t always feasible and Alamance-Burlington School System has tried to bridge the digital divide — the gap between those who have internet access and those who don’t — as most schools have been engaging in remote learning.

SGA approves gender based violence prevention pilot program

Elon University’s Student Government Association approved a bill to create a gender based violence prevention pilot program for the student body. SGA authorized $19,000 from its reserve fund for the creation of a two-part gender based violence prevention pilot program. The goal is to have 20% of undergraduate students participate in the program.

Elon University to bargain with faculty union

Elon University administration will bargain with the faculty union, according to an email from Provost Aswani Volety to faculty and staff on March 4. This decision follows the certification of the faculty union by the National Labor Relations Board on Feb. 19. The decision determined that part-time, limited term and visiting faculty at Elon are eligible to form a union.

Staff, students integrate selves into online learning

Online learning has generated concern among parents and students all over the country as they worry whether or not they are still receiving a quality education. Elon University, which has hosted in-person classes for the entire 2020-2021 academic year, is not immune to such concern. At Elon, 432 students were approved for remote learning either for this semester or during Winter Term.

Where you can get the COVID-19 vaccine in Alamance County

In Group 3 frontline essential workers are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services defines frontline essential workers in categories that include: childcare and pre-K -12 workers, higher education and support staff, essential goods, food and agriculture, government and community service, public health, public safety and transportation.

Elon Athletics surveys varsity athletes about diversity

Elon Athletics sent an anonymous survey to all athletes last week about diversity and inclusion in the school’s varsity athletics programs, according to Associate Director of Athletics Faith Shearer. Shearer also serves as the deputy Title IX coordinator and oversees diversity and inclusion efforts in Elon Athletics.

Commissioners approve moratorium for Snow Camp land development plan

The Alamance County Commissioners unanimously approved a 12-month moratorium on the land development plan for Snow Camp at their March 1 meeting. The moratorium gives the commissioners additional time to finalize the land development plan and reconsider zoning in Snow Camp. Commissioners said the moratorium will give them and the planning department time to study the arising issues of heavy industrial development in Snow Camp.
