Elon football game postponed due to COVID-19 related protocols

Elon University’s football game against William & Mary on April 3  has been postponed due to “COVID-19 related protocols,” according to a press release from the Colonial Athletic Association. In a previous interview with Elon News Network, CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said schools would be able to make their own decisions regarding opting out of game play.

When a friend inspired Dawn Marvin to join a nutrition club, she discovered how much she enjoyed staying healthy and she dropped sixty pounds by altering her eating habits. Blended Nutrition & Energy Smoothie and Juice Bar has opened its second store in the Elon area located on Timberline Station Road. Marvin decided to start her business in order to inspire others.

Elon minor champions intersectional feminism

The minor, initially called Women’s Studies, was developed and introduced at Elon in 1988 by professors Martha Smith and Seena Granowsky, who were inspired to found the program after attending a conference at Duke University on Women’s Studies programs, according to Elon University archives. Since 1988, the minor has served as an interdisciplinary analysis of women’s issues.

A year into pandemic, professor mental health suffers

Professor of psychology CJ Fleming — who specializes in clinical psychology and mental health — said she has noticed two main things when considering professors’ mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: fatigue and capacity for working memory. She said fatigue is probably what has affected her most, since she has had to reformat many of her consistently taught classes to fit an online or hybrid format.

Elon freshman tees off toward top of CAA rankings

Apple Ngamwong has come a long way to play golf at Elon University — literally. The freshman, ranked third in the Colonial Athletic Association conference in women’s golf, is doing it all 9,000 miles away from home. Ngamwong, a Bangkok, Thailand native, said despite her success, it’s still hard to be far away from her home country.

'It genuinely broke my heart': Elon community denounces anti-Asian hate in the U.S.

Over the past year, the United States has witnessed an increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans. The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University-San Bernardino reported data showing a 149% spike of anti-Asian violence in 16 of America’s largest cities. A 21-year-old white male took the lives of eight victims six of whom were women of Asian descent.

Her Campus Elon chapter relaunches with new leadership

In May 2019, the Elon University chapter of the online magazine Her Campus stopped posting, anticipating its leadership studying abroad the next fall. In March 2020, the unanticipated coronavirus pandemic lengthened the hiatus into what appeared to be a permanent shutdown. Now, after going down almost two years ago, Her Campus has relaunched at Elon.

Elon women’s lacrosse starts out with undefeated season

Elon women’s lacrosse has won five games straight, defeating teams both in and out of their conference such as James Madison University, Furman University and Radford University. Despite their 5-0 record, head coach Josh Hexter said the record does not matter when it comes to preparing to compete.

Elon University to have in-person commencement for class of 2021

Elon University announced they will host an in-person ceremony for the class of 2021 with a limited number of guests being allowed to attend. Students will receive at least two guest tickets, according to an email from Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient Committee. Commencement is set for Friday, May 21.

Pandemic cuts student activity fee allocations

Elon University students paid $146 each semester in student activity fees in 2020-21 tuition, a price determined by the board of trustees. However, the allocation of these fees by the Student Government Association has been handled differently due to the coronavirus pandemic and an increase in virtual settings.

SGA swears in 2021-22 executive board, awards senators

Elon University’s 2020-21 Student Government Association held its final senate dinner to celebrate the end of their term.The dinner included senate awards, swearing-in of the executive board for the 2021-2022 school year, a speech from Associate Vice President for Student Life Jana Lynn Patterson honoring the outgoing seniors and an open mic for those who wanted to speak.

Disabilities Resources continues to provide aid amid pandemic

The abrupt changes brought on by the pandemic have highlighted the importance of Elon’s Disabilities Resources Office to disabled students. Susan Wise, director of Disabilities Resources at Elon University, said that she and her three-person staff worked to ensure consistency in accommodations to those who relied on its support during the pandemic.

Chloe Yoon wins SGA executive vice president runoff election

Chloe Yoon has been elected as executive vice president of Elon University’s Student Government Association. Yoon, a junior secondary english education major, won by 67% of the vote in the runoff election. 975 votes were cast in the election. Yoon’s campaign was centered around diversity, equity and inclusion, which was highlighted by her campaign slogan, “affirming that everyone at Elon can bELONg.”

Elon University set to distribute COVID-19 vaccines this Saturday

Elon University will begin administering Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines to students, faculty and staff on campus this Saturday by appointment, according to an email sent to those eligible to receive the vaccine. Any faculty and staff working in person or students with a qualifying medical condition have been notified if they are eligible to sign up for the vaccine.

Alternative spring breaks provided service opportunity for students

The five programs moved from a week-long experience to one weekend and took place in Burlington, Greensboro and Chapel Hill. All programs were less than one hour away from campus and were free for all participants. The school also required all participants to confirm a negative COVID-19 PCR test within a week of the program taking place.

2 Elon juniors vie for SGA executive vice president in runoff election

Elon juniors Chloe Yoon and Ireland Horan are continuing their campaigns for executive vice president after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in last week’s election. For the first time in five years, two candidates for an executive position on Elon’s Student Government Association are participating in a runoff election.
