SGA gives donation of $1,000 to the Chaplain Discretionary Fund

SGA decided to give an annual donation of $1,000 to the Chaplin Discretionary Fund tonight at their weekly business meeting. The Chaplin Fund was established at Elon University to help students, faculty and staff who are in need additional support. Jana Lynn Patterson, advisor to SGA, said examples of this include sudden illness, injury, accident, food insecurity or a natural disaster.

Hotel planned to be built on campus

Elon University has announced plans to build a hotel on campus. The tentatively named "Inn at Elon," will have 80 rooms, a restaurant and lounge, ballroom, conference rooms, a fitness room and an outdoor gathering space.

Saria Samakie, a Syrian refugee, has already lived a long life at age 21. Now a freshman at Georgetown University, he was awarded the Arrupe Scholarship and speaks nationally about his experiences as an immigrant.

World Hijab Day in the Elon community

World Hijab Day is a day of celebrating for Muslim women by walking in their shoes for a day. Elon University is celebrating Hijab Day April 25. Students are invited to cover their heads with either a scarf or cap for the day.

Schar Center inches closer to completion

Just down North Williamson Avenue, a shiny new building awaits the day when it can open its doors and greet the community. The Schar Center, named after the family who donated the majority of money to build it, is the 5,100-seat arena that will be the new home of the Elon University women’s volleyball team and men’s and women’s basketball teams. The arena will replace the current, 1,600-seat Alumni Gym, which the teams and coaching staffs of those three Phoenix squads currently call home.

New hiking trail provides close outdoor opportunities for Elon students

Just a 10 minute drive from Elon, there’s a new trail for hikers, birdwatchers and those who just enjoy the outdoors.  The trail, named “The Breakaway Trail,” begins at the Guilford County Farm and stretches 2.2 miles across farmland, grape vineyards, woods and a creek before ending at a pond. It will celebrate its grand opening Friday, April 27.

Elon student serves as representative for app addressing money management

On March 21, 2018 a man named Ben Psillas launched an app with the potential to change the way people manage money.  Psillas and his team are the co-founders of an app called Debx. Debx is an app that that helps consumers get the most out of their credit cards by creating financial security. It helps people to earn credit and credit card rewards without risking going into debt.

Relay for Life rings in $75K

Friday, April 20 marked Elon University's fifth Relay for Life fundraiser. The event brought together many who have been personally affected by cancer, and raised about $75,000.

Elon baseball team hosts alumni weekend

Elon baseball alumni of new and old came to campus during the second annual Baseball Alumni Weekend from April 20 to 22. The gathering of old friends and teammates was complemented by tailgates, dinners, and cheering on the current squad as they swept the University of Hartford Hawks.
