Candidates for dean of Student Health and Well-Being present in front of Elon community

Candidates for the next dean of Student Health and Well-Being at Elon University presented in front of the Elon community in recent weeks as part of the selection process. The position is currently held by Jana Lynn Patterson, who is retiring in fall 2026 after 40 years at Elon University. The dean will lead the HealthEU Initiative and the Boldly Elon strategic plan, while supervising departments like Counseling Services and Student Health Services. They will also manage the new 135,000 square foot HealthEU building, set to open in fall 2026.

Elon University baseball team drops final game against Fairfield University

As the bells rang out on a warm noon in Elon, North Carolina, first pitch was called for at Latham Park as the Elon Phoenix and Fairfield Stags set for battle in the final game of a three-game series. Elon won the first two games of the series, thanks to a walk-off single by freshman Gar Hindle in Game 1 and a combined no-hitter in Game 2.

African Diaspora of Elon embraces culture with first-ever African Night

The African Diaspora of Elon closed the university’s celebration of Black History Month with the first-ever African Night on Feb. 28, with music, fashion, comedy and pageantry. Abdul-Malik Harrison, advisor to ADE and assistant director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education said though he has seen the campus put together amazing cookouts, parties and cultural events, African Night was unique and new.

Elonthon hosts pickleball tournament to support Duke Children’s Hospital

Elonthon hosted its semesterly pickleball tournament in Elon’s South Campus Gym on Feb. 28. The event was more than just a competition — it also supported a larger cause. Elonthon operates under the motto “Kids Can’t Wait.” The organization hosts events throughout the year to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network in partnership with Duke Children’s Hospital.

GLC, CREDE host annual Kiki Ball

Late Night Elon collaborated with the Gender & LGBTQIA Center to host the annual Kiki Ball celebration. Inspired by LGBTQIA ballroom culture, the event is historically centered around queer and trans people of color and serves as a way to honor diversity in expression within LGBTQIA communities. The evening featured music, a stage, and a panel of judges, including an Elon alum, David Carter, who was excited to see the event come together.

Author lectures on misogyny and extremism

The Elon community gathered in Numen Lumen’s McBride Gathering Space room to hear Cynthia Miller-Idris speak about the influence of misogyny on domestic violence and violent extremism. The lecture honored the memory of Lauren Dunne Astley, who was murdered by her boyfriend in July 2011, before she was able to begin her college journey at Elon University.

Criminal justice reform attorney visits Elon, tells story of hope, dignity

When attorney Brittany Barnett met Sharanda Jones, she saw positivity and light, far from what she expected from meeting a woman 10 years into her life sentence. Barnett was a young lawyer who felt a pull towards Jones, who was sentenced to life in prison on her first federal drug offense. Barnett, a criminal justice reform attorney, visited Elon University on Feb. 26 as part of the Liberal Arts Forum, a student-run organization that invites speakers on various topics to engage with the Elon community.

Mckinnon Hall was decorated in gold, green and red on Feb. 25 as students came together for Elon’s Carnaval celebration, a festival celebrated across Latin America before Lent begins. The event featured food, crafts and performances from Elon’s drum line and traditional Afro-Brazilian dance.

Elon to adopt new learning management system following fall review of Moodle platform

Students logging into their courses next academic year may notice a shift in how assignments, grades and course materials are organized as Elon transitions from Moodle, its old learning management system, to Canvas by Instructure, its new one. The decision followed a campuswide evaluation of Moodle that included surveys and open forums, according to Teaching and Learning Technologies Senior Director Kelly Reimer.

Elon Votes sponsors State of the Union watch party

Around 15 students gathered in Moseley Center on Feb. 24 for the State of the Union watch party, hosted by Elon Votes. The broadcast was President Trump’s first State of the Union of his second term and lasted a record 108 minutes, according to AP News. The previous record for the longest presidential address to Congress was 100 minutes and was set by Trump last year.

As a mother and Vice President of Development for the Invictus Project, Whitney Miller said there was no way she could ignore child exploitation. The Invictus Project is a nonprofit organization that supports the Invictus Task Force — a multiagency uniting Randolph, Alamance, Davidson and Forsyth County Sheriff's Offices with Homeland Security Investigations and the State Bureau of Investigation.

Freshman duo grows up fast for Phoenix

In a season defined by adjustment, opportunity and growth, two rookies have helped steady Elon women’s basketball when it mattered most. Freshman center Tamia Watkins controls the paint and freshman guard Ashanti Fox controls the pace. The rookies have combined to earn Coastal Athletic Association Rookie of the Week honors for four straight weeks, going back to Jan. 19.

Elon University enrollment drops below 6,000 for first time since 2018

Elon University’s undergraduate enrollment has dipped below 6,000 students for the first time since spring 2018, according to the Spring Registrar’s Report released Feb. 23. This decrease comes after an 11.6% drop in enrollment for the class of 2029. Part of this pattern can be attributed to the “demographic cliff,” the decreasing supply of college students from a falling national birth rate that began in 2007. The total undergraduate enrollment of 5,974 is a decrease from the 6,226 students the university reported in the spring of 2025. It’s also roughly 200 fewer students than the 6,191 reported in fall 2025. Though overall student numbers dropped, there was also an increase of 523 seniors, compared to the fall report.

Mebane City Council to expand offices, parking for staff

The Mebane City Council purchased a dentist's office and parking lot for $325,000 in a unanimous vote. The property is located across from the City Hall. North Carolina requires local governments to keep a minimum reserve — called a fund balance — equal to 8% of their annual general expenses.

Elon University, Go Baby Go modify cars for children with mobility challenges

Elon University’s Innovation Hall was filled with the high-pitched hums of electric motors and the sounds of childhood play April 4. The noises came from the first Go Baby Go program at Elon, where the community takes standard electric toy cars and adapts them for children who cannot traditionally operate one.
