Elon officials warn students about ‘phishing’ cyber-scams

A new survey from the Pew Research Center found that 73% of U.S. adults have experienced some kind of online scam or attack. On college campuses like Elon University, the threat of these scams, often called phishing, is increasingly prevalent, especially when it comes to targeting student emails. Gary Sheehan, director of Elon Information Security, said scammers have grown more convincing by using artificial intelligence to craft realistic-looking messages.  “Phishing scams are fake messages designed to trick you into giving away personal information, like your password, bank details, or student ID,” Sheehan wrote. “These attacks have become more common at Elon, and AI has made these attacks more dangerous.”

Mental Health First Aid training aims to build compassion, awareness at Elon

As new research from Boston University’s Healthy Minds Study shows signs of improvement in college student mental health, with rates of severe depression and suicidal ideation dropping in the past year, universities like Elon University are continuing to expand their efforts to promote student well-being. At Elon, students and staff can participate in Mental Health First Aid training, a program offered through the National Council on Mental Wellbeing. The course teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among peers and colleagues.

Belk Library connects alumni to Elon University’s past at annual Flashback Friday

Elon University Belk Library and University Archives staff hosted their annual Flashback Friday event Oct. 10, giving alumni the chance to take a look back at Elon’s history. The event was part of Homecoming weekend programming and aimed to connect alumni with Elon’s history through resources preserved by University Archives staff. Randall Bowman, archivist and assistant librarian at Belk Library said the event showcases Elon’s history, particularly from the past 50 years through yearbooks, student publications and photographs. “We had a gentleman who graduated in 2000 come and actually look through the 90s one and identified quite a few people, including himself,” Bowman said.

NC State professor encourages Elon students to be disruptors in sustainability

Students and faculty gathered in McKinnon Hall Oct. 7 to hear North Carolina State University professor Jessica Yinka Thomas, director of the Business Sustainability Collaborative, deliver the keynote address, kicking off Elon University's Sustainability Week. The Business Sustainability Collaborative at NC State works to integrate environmental and social responsibility into business, education, and industry partnerships. Yinka Thomas discussed B Corps, which are companies that demonstrate high social and environmental performance.“Their vision is to build an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economic system for all people and the planet,” Yinka Thomas said.

2025 Family Weekend Events Calendar

Elon University is hosting its annual family weekend from Sept. 26-28. Parents, grandparents, and siblings will gather on campus for a weekend filled with events that everyone can enjoy. For freshmen the weekend represents an important chance to reconnect with family while showing off the place they now call home, including for freshman Maddie Levis. “I’m really excited for them to see the campus more in depth,” Levis said. “And for them to meet all my friends and just show them around.”
