WASHINGTON, D.C. — Elon University men’s basketball took the court in the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament for the first time under head coach Mike Schrage on Saturday. One of Schrage’s recruits, graduate guard Marcus Sheffield II, helped in securing a come-from-behind, 63-61 victory against James Madison University.

Freshman guard Hunter McIntosh was named the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year. McIntosh was joined by fellow freshman guard Hunter Woods as members of the CAA All-Rookie team this year. Graduate transfer guard Marcus Sheffield II was named to the All-CAA second team.

After being shut out the previous night, Elon University baseball (6-4) put up six runs against Indiana State University (4-5) on Saturday, but it was not enough to beat the Sycamores. Elon lost its third straight game by a final score of 9-6.

Every day, Elon University athletes shuffle through the doors of Alumni Gym. They take a right down the hallway with a sign on the wall that reads, “Academic Support for Athletics.” At the end of the hallway is a pod of offices where athletes and advisers meet to discuss everything from class schedules to life goals.

The Elon University Phoenix (11-18, 8-9 CAA) faced off against rival James Madison University Dukes (9-17, 2-13 CAA) winning 70-62 on the road. This game marked just the second to last game the Dukes would play in what’s been its home court since 1982. It was also the first game of three on the road for the Phoenix, its final three games before conference tournament play. It's last away excursion proved successful for the Phoenix, winning both games away, and the momentum only continued today.

As Venessa Corbett stepped onto the hardwood in Elon’s Schar Center shortly after her 60th birthday, she was greeted by the same raucous cheering, the unmistakable smell of popcorn and the bright shining lights that illuminated her Elon hall of fame basketball career in Alumni Gym.
