GOP candidates belittle women through volatile sexual comments

Four years ago, I don’t know that anyone could have predicted that women’s reproductive health would be one of the most hotly-debated topics heading into the pinnacle of the presidential election season. The economy, sure, but a reignited social divide on issues of rape and abortion? But that’s where we are, forced to confront the ugly reality that many people in America, including many women, don’t see women’s bodies as their own. This particular point has been shoved to the forefront of people’s minds in the last few weeks as numerous political candidates in the Republican Party made comments about women that were both insensitive and simply ignorant. The most talked about instance was Missouri Rep.

Women's volleyball moves forward following tough loss to Alabama

This past weekend, the Elon University women’s volleyball team hosted the Elon Phoenix Classic tournament, which included Gardner-Webb University, North Carolina Central University and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Elon started off strong in the tournament, winning its first two matches in three games against Gardner-Webb and NC Central. But in the final match of the tournament, the Phoenix faced the powerhouse the Alabama Crimson Tide. With the advantage of being able to watch Alabama play, head coach Mary Tendler said the team knew what Alabama was going to do.

New dean and university librarian aims to expand functionality of Belk Library

The first week of class inspires the library with a new energy, but the new dean and university librarian envisions a library that reaches beyond the brick walls and delves into Elon University's campus life. "One thing we are emphasizing is outreach of the library throughout the campus community," said Joan Ruelle, who assumed the position June 1. Ruelle aims to establish partnerships with organizations throughout the campus community in order to enhance the library's activity in the Elon community, she said. "I expect it to really happen because she's bringing in new, fresh ideas and she has lots of ideas that most everyone would be on board with," said Terry Buckley, assistant to the dean in Belk Library.
