Protest against gun violence held in Raleigh, nationwide

It has been 1,578 days since the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that sparked the youth-led March for Our Lives movement. 1,540 days after the first demonstration, thousands of people gathered once again Saturday in Raleigh, Washington D.C. and across the country to protest a recent string of national gun violence.

NC Senate passes bill to ban instruction on sexual orientation, gender identity in grades K-3

Teachers could be banned from teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity to students in kindergarten through third grades after a bill was passed by the North Carolina State Senate on June 1. House Bill 755, also known as the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” passed with a vote of 28 for and 18 against. Now, the bill will go to the State House of Representatives.

Four Elon University seniors commissioned into Army

Just one day before they’re set to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas, four Elon University seniors took the oath of office and were commissioned into the U.S. Army on May 19. During the ceremony, cadets took their oaths, were pinned with second lieutenant bars by those close to them and received their first salutes as commissioned officers.

Reimagined baccalaureate ceremony celebrates Elon University class of 2022

Four years ago, the class of 2022 gathered Under the Oaks for the first time during New Student Convocation. On May 17, they gathered once again to reflect on their time at Elon. This year’s reimagined senior baccalaureate ceremony took place near the beginning of Commencement Week. The ceremony included time for reflection, musical performances, prayers and a candlelight ceremony.

Elon University’s campus glows as Festival of Lights and Luminaries expands cultural celebration

Elon University’s Festival of Lights and Luminaries took place on Dec. 4 and was hosted by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life. Luminaries lit up Elon’s campus as students walked around and enjoyed the night. The festival started incorporating themes in 2020 with each year being a new theme. This year it was, “Many Lights on One Night.” “This year the festival is bigger than ever, so the theme represents how all the small lights that each of us bring create one larger light on campus,” Hillary Zaken, the director of multifaith programming and engagement for the Truitt Center said.

Strong start not enough in Elon University men’s basketball loss to Furman University

The energy in Schar Center was palpable as the Phoenix built an early 18 point lead. However, the Phoenix couldn’t sustain momentum as Furman University surged in the second half to hand Elon a home defeat on Dec. 3. Head coach Billy Taylor said the Phoenix simply didn’t respond well when Furman started to take control. While there were encouraging moments during the game, Taylor stressed the importance of maintaining that level. “When they punched back, we didn’t respond the right way,” Taylor said. “We need more of those moments strung together over the course of 40 minutes.”
