Alamance County rises to high levels of community COVID-19 transmission

Alamance County once again has high levels of community COVID-19 transmission. It is among half of North Carolina counties with high transmission, according to data from the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. The increase in transmission comes as the more transmissible Omicron BA.5 variant overtook other variants in the state, leading North Carolina cases. Last week, there were 450 positive cases in Alamance County.

Students present research upon completion of SURE program

The 45 students in the SURE program have worked full time throughout the summer with faculty research mentors on programs of interest. Each student received a $3000 stipend, and the program culminated in a poster session July 20, giving students the opportunity to showcase their research.

Biden signs executive order to protect access to abortion

President Joe Biden signed an executive order today in an attempt to protect access to reproductive health care services. The executive order outlines actions intended to lessen potential penalties that those seeking an abortion could face after the ruling, as well as protect access to abortion medication by mail.

2022-23 academic year marks 30 years of common reading at Elon University

For the 30th year in a row, Elon University will continue its common reading program and has selected, “Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World—and Why Things Are Better Than You Think” by Hans Rosling for the 2022-23 academic year. A committee composed of faculty, staff and students chose the book as one that represents the core values of the university for freshmen students.

Benevolence Farm expands to Burlington

The end of June marks the first month of operation for Benevolence Farm’s secondary location in Burlington. Benevolence Farm, a non-profit social organization, works alongside formerly incarcerated women who are able to live and work at the farm upon their release.

Elon University campus police scheduled for on-site assessment

The Elon University Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment, Chief of Police Joe LeMire announced in an email June 28. The assessment, administered by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, is part of a program to achieve accreditation, which according to the email, requires verification that it meets professional standards in addition to compliance with standards in four areas: administration, policy and procedures, operations and support services.

Congress passes gun safety bill

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill to address gun violence today. All House Democrats and 14 Republicans voted for the legislation, and the final vote was 234-193. This marks the first major gun safety legislation since the 1994 assault weapons ban. The bill now heads to President Joe Biden for his signature. He is expected to sign.

Supreme Court strikes down New York gun control law

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a century-old New York gun law today that placed strict restrictions on carrying a concealed firearm in public for self-defense purposes. This comes at the same time the U.S. Senate is working to pass a bipartisan gun safety bill, and other states, including North Carolina, are in the process of passing gun safety bills. The 6-3 decision found that requiring applicants applying for a concealed carry license to demonstrate a special reason for self-defense is a violation of the Second Amendment.

U.S. Supreme Court rules North Carolina Republicans can defend voter ID law in court

The U.S. Supreme Court released a key decision today in the ongoing fight over North Carolina voting laws, ruling 8-1 that leaders of the state’s Republican legislature can defend a photo identification law in court. The court’s ruling did not discuss the merits of having photo ID laws. Justice Neil Gorsuch, who wrote the majority opinion, based this decision on the right of partisan state governments to represent themselves in court.

2nd half rally comes up short against Stony Brook

For much of the first half and early in the second, Stony Brook seemed to have an answer for every comeback attempt by Elon. The men’s basketball team trailed by double digits for the majority of the game, and despite clawing their way back, it wasn’t enough as Stony Brook held on for a 72-68 win.
