New talent adds depth to Elon women's basketball

From the opponent’s standpoint, planning to play the Elon University women’s basketball team has become easier over the last few years. It was expected that Elon’s offense would feature a steady diet of Ali Ford, Kelsey Harris or Zora Stephenson, and not much else. Enter true freshmen Shay Burnett and Malaya Johnson and sophomore transfer Essence Baucom, and gone are the days of an Elon team with limited options. “One of the things as coaches we’re most excited about is the depth,” said Charlotte Smith, who’s entering her fourth year as head coach of the Phoenix.

Elon University senior psychology major Jenna Gilder has been seeking assistance for her undergraduate research from the Makerbot Replicator 2—a tool that speaks in a series of whirrs and chirrups. 3D printers, like the Makerbot, read a digital blueprint of a design, and the printer head forms the design by pouring heated material (usually plastic) in successive layers.  First, plastic filament, the 3D equivalent to paper, is threaded through a tube in the printer.

Alamance Battleground Celebrates Veterans

Preserving the past is what Alamance Battleground reenactor Bill Thompson strives to do everyday during Colonial Living History Week. Thompson has worked at the battleground for 11 years, and he started working during his junior year at Elon University. The Alamance Battleground, named after the Battle of Alamance in 1771, holds historical value because it's said that it hosted the first battle of the American Revolution. The county was named in remembrance, and the local community has since then hosted the week-long living history event to commemorate the lives sacrificed and freedoms gained from that battle. Thompson said he enjoys working there mainly because of the interactions he gets to have with those who have served on active duty. "I've talked to people that've been all over the world," said Thompson.
