The Elon University men’s tennis team’s losing streak to start the 2015 spring season has reached 5 games following a 6-0 loss to Old Dominion University on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The Phoenix fell behind losing the doubles point by the smallest of margins. Senior Jordan Kaufman and redshirt-freshman Neal Port lost to junior Zvonimir Podvinski and freshman Javier Jover Maestre 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Soon after, seniors Stefan Fortmann and Brian Kowalski pulled one back for Elon with a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker win over freshmen Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl at No. 1 doubles.

That meant it all came down to the match at No. 2 doubles. Senior Juan Madrid and junior Robert Lindgren forced the match to a tiebreaker against senior Carlos Lopez Villa and freshman Theophile Lanthiez, but lost 7-6 (7-1).

Old Dominion carried their momentum into the singles portion of the match. Lopez Villa made quick work of Fortmann at No. 1 singles dropping just one game in the 6-0, 6-1 straight sets win. Moundir then wrapped up his 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win at No. 2 singles over freshman Josh Luck.

Jover Maestre defeated senior Jordan Kaufman in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the win for Old Dominion at No. 5 singles.

With the match already decided, Lindgren lost in straight sets at No. 3 singles and Madrid lost in a super-tiebreaker at No. 6 singles.

Old Dominion improves to 4-0 with the win, while Elon is still looking for their first win of the season after dropping to 0-5. The Phoenix will wrap up their weekend trip in Virginia when they travel to Richmond to take on Virginia Commonwealth University tomorrow, Feb. 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
