Contact tracing catches COVID-19 clusters

Within the past two weeks, ten clusters have been identified by the Alamance County Health Department amongst Elon University students. Clusters of COVID-19 cases have been popping up in residence halls and greek organizations across campus. Seven fraternities and sororities and three freshman dorms all have had clusters.

Over 60 new cases of COVID-19 identified from Elon University’s expanded testing

Since starting expanded testing of 5,000 Elon University students due to a record high number of COVID-19 cases on campus, over 1,800 test results have been returned, according to an email to the Elon community from Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee.

COVID-19 testing continues while the power is out

Despite the campus wide power outage at Elon University’s coronavirus testing is still up and running in Alumni Gym. According to Brett Simon, assistant director of campus recreation and wellness for sport programs, COVID-19 testing will continue as planned for the remainder of the day, despite Alumni Gym currently being without power.

COVID-19 spikes cause anxiety, ire among students

Some students are angry after seeing the spike in the school’s COVID-19 case numbers, while others feel like they can't socialize at all because of the record high case numbers. One student said she most of that anger was directed at the Elon administration and believes that through their emails, the university is blaming students for the spike in cases.

Elon University uses new, cheaper COVID-19 test

Elon University is using a new PCR COVID-19 test from Radeas Labs. The change in test comes as the university hopes to test up to 5,000 students for the virus this week. Chair of the Ready & Resilient Committee Jeff Stein said after assessing the company’s “capabilities negotiating a contract,” the university was able to start using the tests this week.

The Gender and LGBTQIA Center and Truitt Center created the Spirit and Pride Initiative, a program that strives to create a bridge between gender and sexual identity and religion. In its first year on campus, this initiative has already started to get positive feedback.

Burlington Baseball unaffiliated with minor league

Major League Baseball and USA Baseball announced that the Royals’ league — the Appalachian League — will no longer be affiliated with minor league baseball and will become a collegiate summer league. This announcement ended the Burlington baseball team’s relationship with its MLB affiliate the Kansas City Royals.

Alamance County 2020 voter guide

Faces of Homelessness panel to take place virtually

The Faces of Homelessnes panel is assembled by the National Coalition for the Homeless and sponsored by the Elon chapter of Campus Kitchen.

Elon to host national undergraduate research journal

For the next three years, Elon University’s political science department will edit and publish the Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Journal of Politics, which releases both a spring and fall issue each year. Elon will be the fourth school to host the journal since it was founded in 2001.

Elon University expects students to self-enforce new COVID-19 guidelines

Dan Anderson, member of the Ready & Resilient committee and vice president of university communications, said the university expects students to comply with limiting their social circles. He said the university is “less focused on punishment and enforcement” and more on student actions that slow the spread of COVID-19.

Elon University moves to High Alert, identifies 3 new clusters

Elon University has moved to level 3 — High Alert after the university reported the single highest daily cases of COVID-19 with a total of 44 new cases. The move to High Alert comes on the first day of social hiatus and five days after moving to in level 2 — Moderate Alert. According to Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee, there were three new clusters identified bringing the total number of clusters identified on campus in the past two weeks to eight.

Elon singing groups find ways adjust to pandemic

With the onset of the pandemic, Elon choir and a cappella groups are now adapting to new rules and regulations put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In accordance with the new regulations, singers now wear masks, practice virtually or at socially distanced rehearsals and are shifting their focus from large concerts to making new recorded music.

Students identify issues important to college age voters

This will be the first election many college students will cast a ballot in, and it’s widely considered a monumental election for other reasons as well. As tensions across the country remain high from the COVID-19 pandemic, other concerns regarding Black Lives Matter protests and health care affordability during the pandemic are also defining issues voters currently face.
