"Hello, Dolly!" performers connect their lives to their characters

"Hello, Dolly!" tells the adventures of mischievous meddler Dolly Levi as she travels to Yonkers, New York, for the matchmaking scheme of a lifetime. The department of performing arts' presents this turn of the century pick-me-up performance in a celebration of life's every moment. Elon University brings the musical to the McCrary Theatre stage this year — the year it returns to Broadway — in a larger-than-life show emphasized by outbursts of mad giggles, blundering gentlemen and grandiose verbosity. The show's stars are portrayed by musical theater students who use their own experiences and strengths to give "Hello, Dolly!" its timeless, giddy essence.

#Metoo provides community to victims of sexual assault

Gabby, whose last name has been excluded to protect her identity, remembers an incident two years ago as “the most aggressive form of sexual assault” she had ever faced; but earlier this month, when the #MeToo campaign resurfaced on social media to support survivors of sexual assault, the thing that hit Gabby the most was: “I don’t have one story, I have multiple.”

Phoenix basketball teams look to start seasons off right

Entering the final year in Alumni Gym, both the Elon University men and women's basketball teams look to be competitive in the Colonial Athletic Association. The men have a 31-game slate, not including the preseason exhibition game on Nov. 1 against Randolph College. The women will have a 29-game list, adding an additional preseason exhibition game against Anderson University on Nov. 5. Head coaches Matt Matheny and Charlotte Smith enter their ninth and seventh years at the helm, respectively, and provided their thoughts on the Phoenix teams and what they hope to accomplish this season.

New alumni network brings Latinx and Hispanic community members together

Homecoming Weekend brings hundreds of alumni back to Elon University to visit the campus they once called home. This year, a new alumni group is making their debut: the Elon Latinx Hispanic Alumni Network (ELHAN).  The creation of an alumni network for Latinx- and Hispanic-identified students has been in the works for several years, but considering the growth of the Latinx/Hispanic population at Elon over the last several years, many saw now as the perfect time to create a formal group.

Elon junior dies 'unexpectedly' Saturday

Elon University junior Breslin Thomas Wiley, 21, died Saturday morning. He was found at his off-campus home in the Town of Elon.  Town of Elon Police were called to Wiley's home at 216 E Foster Drive, shortly after noon. An investigation is currently being conducted to determine the cause of death.

Taking on a Broadway hit

Elon University's fall musical is bringing a classic Broadway hit to the college stage: Hello Dolly!  Audiences will not see the two months of rehearsals, learning music and choreographing every second of the show, in a two minute group number. Instead they'll hear the harmonies of the ensemble, the stomping to the beat of the chorus, and Dolly herself leading a parade.

LENETT: In search of sense, look to the stars

Before arriving at college, I couldn’t even entertain the thought of reading for pleasure. Throughout my years of schooling, reading was always assigned, and it felt like an absolute chore to learn about seemingly negligible topics--like astrophysics, for example. To add to the agony, I was usually required to craft some variation of a templated, soulless essay about what I learned.
