SGA to announce class of 2025 election results

Elon University’s Student Government Association will announce results of the class of 2025 elections on Tuesday night, Sept. 14, in downstairs Moseley. A total of 552 ballots were cast during the election period.

The Class of 2025 campaigns for Elon University Student Government

Kicking off the campaign on Sept. 6, 2021, 13 members of the class of 2025 will be campaigning for senator and class Student Government Association positions. Elections will begin Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7 a.m. and end at 7 p.m. that day.

Bob Byrd campaigning for economic growth and racial equity for Burlington

Bob Byrd served as an Alamance County Commissioner from 2014 to 2018 and is now setting his sights on a seat on the Burlington City Council this fall. He hopes his campaign will push forth efforts of economic development and inclusion within the city.

SGA town hall focuses on remembrance of 9/11, 20 years later

Members of Elon University’s Student Government Association met for a town hall meeting focused on the remembrance of 9/11, 20 years later, on Thursday night. Members heard from Mark Dalhouse, director for global education initiatives, and then gathered in groups to discuss their thoughts about the events on 9/11 and how they connect to current events and issues, such as the pandemic, racial equity and inclusion, and mental health of college students.

Town of Elon Board of Aldermen considers new location for police station

Toward the end of their agenda session meeting on Sept. 7, the Town of Elon’s Board of Aldermen went into a closed session to discuss a potential new land acquisition. The property will be the location for the new police station, according to Town Manager Rich Roedner.

Board of Aldermen considers formation of ordinance and policy review committee

The town of Elon Board of Aldermen met for an agenda session on Sept. 7 to discuss the formation of an ordinance and policy review committee, changes to monthly billing for water and sewing services, financial incentives for the town’s police department and amendments to policies regarding COVID sick leave and vaccine incentives.

Redistricting data reveals population shifts for Alamance County

In the coming months, legislators in the North Carolina General Assembly will use redistricting data from the 2020 Census to redraw state congressional districts, state senate districts and state house districts. The redistricting data for North Carolina, including for Alamance County, was released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Aug. 12.

Board of Aldermen approves Equality Resolution

The Board of Aldermen approved an Equality Resolution, after nearly four months of discussion, at the Aug. 10, 2021 meeting. The board also recognized the promotion of Lt. Lyle Anibal to assistant chief of operations at the town of Elon police department, discussed commonly asked questions regarding water and sewer bills and approved a resolution for the town of Elon to secure loans for the purchase of the Travis Creek Pump Station from Gibsonville.

The City of Burlington announces next chief of police

The City of Burlington announced George “Rich” Austin Jr. will be the city’s newest chief of police. The Charlotte native plans to relocate to Burlington in the coming weeks and most recently served as the police chief of Milton, Georgia since January 2017.

Board of Aldermen hears preliminary ADA self-assessment findings

The Board of Aldermen met for an agenda session Monday, August 2. Members discussed the town’s self-assessment of the accessibility of facilities and programs, a budget amendment for the police department and retirement benefits for town employees. The board also discussed adopting an equality resolution and the town’s decision to look into vaccination and mask requirements for town employees.

Michael Woods announces campaign for mayor of the town of Elon

Michael Woods, an Elon resident, said seeing the Pro-Trump caravan driving through Elon inspired him to run for mayor of the town of Elon this fall. Woods hopes his campaign for mayor will encourage the community to confront concerns over inclusiveness.

Dejuana Bigelow campaigning for ‘one Burlington’ this fall

Dejuana Bigelow, a patient access specialist at Cone Health, announced her candidacy for a seat on the Burlington City Council. If elected, she would be the first African American woman to serve on the city council. Bigelow said the absence of diversity on the council is something that she hopes to see change.

Graham Police Department, Alamance Sheriff’s Office able to withhold march footage

An Alamance County Superior Court Judge said Wednesday the Graham Police Department and Alamance Sheriff’s Office can withhold video footage from the Oct. 31 ‘I Am Change’ march that resulted in pepper spraying and arrests, pending an appeal on a previous order.

Burlington Mayor Ian Baltutis announces run for fourth term

BURLINGTON — City of Burlington Mayor Ian Baltutis will run for reelection this November. The Elon alumnus was first elected at age 30 in 2015, becoming the city of Burlington’s youngest mayor. He has served three terms as mayor.
