SGA Acorn Fund supports student business on campus

‘Unlearn’ grapples with racism in Alamance County

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder by a white police officer last May, Toni Autry used her social media platforms to create the film “Unlearn: The Consequences of Racism.” In partnership with co-director Martin Buchanan and producer Alex Klein, the film aims to capture the fight for racial justice in Alamance County through interviews with county residents and activists.

Faculty and staff volunteers reflect on their experience administering COVID-19 tests throughout the pandemic

Throughout the 2020-21 academic year, 150 volunteers have staffed the COVID-19 testing site in Alumni Gym. Faculty and staff were able to sign up in January for a four-hour slot each week to administer tests or check students in.

Town of Elon hopes to see growth from North Carolina Census gains

Data from the 2020 Census determined that North Carolina gained 9.5% more residents from 2010 to 2020 and a 14th seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. While the national data is available, redistricting data will not be available until August, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Elon University announces new mask policy, in line with CDC guidelines

Elon University announced a new outdoor mask policy effective immediately, Friday, April 30. According to an email from Jeff Stein, the chair of Ready & Resilient Committee, Elon has altered its face covering policy in line with new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and state of North Carolina.

Taking a recess, how Elon Law adapted to a hybrid learning environment

Elon Law has faced many challenges in its transition to an online learning environment, including switching classes to a hybrid model, preparing students for a virtual bar exam and making adjustments to its student mentor program. Elon Law implemented a hybrid format for classes throughout the 2020-21 academic year. Students can attend classes either in person or online, depending on their preference.

Occupy Graham demonstrators gather for a second night to protest shooting of Andrew Brown Jr.

Occupy Graham demonstrators gathered at Sequential Park, commonly called Wyatt Outlaw Park, this evening for their bi-weekly demonstration. The demonstration was held to protest the decision by Elizabeth City sheriff’s deputies and a judge not to release the body camera footage from the shooting of Andrew Brown Jr., as well as the arrest of two protesters in Graham yesterday.

Jason Husser named chair of Elon University's Academic Council

Jason Husser, professor of political science and policy studies, will be the chair of the Academic Council for the 2021-22 academic year. Husser, who is also the director of Elon Poll, was voted in unanimously and will be taking over from Paula Patch, who stepped away from the position to focus on her role as assistant director of the Elon core curriculum.

Solar farm hindered from powering the university

The 15-acre solar farm was constructed in 2015 and consists of 9,900 individual solar cells. At its full potential, the farm is expected to generate 4,500 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, though the electricity produced over the past three years has been a little under 3,000 megawatt hours of energy annually, due in part to cloudy days.

Occupy Graham demonstrators gathered today in downtown Graham from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the same place they’ve been meeting every Wednesday and Saturday since the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. But today, demonstrators gathered following the George Floyd murder verdict knowing that there is still work to be done.

‘It has been far too long’: Derek Chauvin murder conviction evokes sense of justice for Elon community

Derek Chauvin was found guilty of three charges for the murder of George Floyd: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison, and his sentencing is expected in the next few weeks.

In a study conducted by Business Wire in October 2020, 43% of small to mid-sized businesses in the United States reported significant or severe impact since the beginning of the virus, resulting in layoffs and closures. For Asian businesses, the economic hardships of the pandemic has an added layer.

Vice President Kamala Harris visits Triad, speaks on American Jobs Plan

Her first stop was at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown. The college was selected due to its technical training at the Center for Advanced Manufacturing.

Some Elon businesses hope to see a better future in 2021

Downtown Elon’s businesses, stretching from Pandora’s Pies in the northeast to MaGerk’s Pub and Grill in the southwest, are watching closely as COVID-19 vaccines are administered around North Carolina and the weather heats up. The owners of the assortment of shops in downtown Elon are hoping the events of the next few months, including graduation, will increase sales.
