Marriage Equality Panel tackles prominent LGBTQ issues

While marriage equality is often discussed in the news and on social media, Elon University’s LGBTQIA panel discussion showed that there are many other pressing issues in the community. The panel, as part of Elon’s 2013 Pride Week, brought in students and professors from campus to talk about prominent issues for LGBTQIA people both in the United States and around the world. With the Supreme Court hearing cases on the legality of the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8 just last month, marriage equality was one issue of interest for many attending the panel. Senior Emily Kane, an advocacy and education chair for Spectrum, Elon’s queer-straight alliance, said she believed that not only would DOMA be overturned, but that the court would rule widely on Prop 8 and overturn same-sex marriage bans in all states. “The nation is ready for it,” Kane said.

Championship Rings Stolen from Elon Baseball Player's Home

Two rings, a laptop, and an XBOX were among items stolen An Elon baseball player arrived to his Jennings Berry Drive residence early Sunday morning to find his 2011 Southern Conference Championship ring and Elon Baseball Summer Championship ring missing, according to an Elon Town Police report. The police report lists the rings to be worth $400 a piece. The report says catcher Alex Swim called police at 1:50 a.m.

Hitting Home for Crossroads Tailgate

Sport and event management students hosted the Hitting Home for Crossroads tailgate on Sunday, April 14, at Hunt Softball Park. Students were able to enjoy food and fun games, but the main goal of the event was to raise awareness for Crossroads, a resource center in Burlington, that aims to reduce sexual violence.

Pride Week

"I am gay and I am very okay with that," said Diego Fernandes, a first-year exchange student from Brazil. Others have expressed that they are excited for Pride week to start this week, but Fernandes is not as enthusiastic. "I don't feel the necessity to be celebrating the fact that I am gay for some reason because it is so natural for me." Instead of large, public celebration Fernandes says understanding is the first step to accepting someone who is gay.

National debate: The fate of marriage equality in the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court captured the attention of the Elon University community last month as it heard arguments about marital rights of LGBTQ-identified Americans, an issue that has elicited both activism and criticism from Elon students, faculty and alumni. The court considered both the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a 1996 federal law that awards federal benefits according to the traditional definition of marriage, and Proposition 8 (Prop 8), a 2008 amendment to California’s state constitution that legally recognizes marriage as a union of one man and one woman. During the week of March 25, when both sets of arguments were heard, many Elon students changed their Facebook profile picture to a pink equal sign to symbolize their support of marriage equality, and some engaged in debate both on and offline. While the move toward legalizing same-sex marriage encourages some LGBTQ activists, others, including senior Lauren Clapp, an advocacy and education chair for Spectrum, Elon’s queer-straight alliance, point out that marriage equality is not the dominant issue for most LGBTQ people. “I get really frustrated by organizations like the Human Rights Campaign who pose themselves as the leading LGBTQ advocacy organization, but are in many ways a single issue organization,” Clapp said.

Rebel Wilson hosts MTV Movie Awards, solidifies Breakthrough Performance award

Rebel Wilson continued to break into the U.S. movie community Sunday night as she hosted the MTV Movie Awards. She used her on-the-spot comedy as well as her slapstick humor to open the show with a fake double nip-slip. Wilson joked that she was shocked she was asked to host the awards show and that MTV was shocked also. “They thought I was Adele,” Wilson said. Wilson used her homeland, Australia, as inspiration for one of her outfits as she carried around a stuffed koala bear that she said had x-ray vision to prank celebrities Quvenzha?e Wallis and Chris Evans. Taylor Lautner, famous for his 6-pack abs, accepted the “Shirtless Oscar” while wearing a fat stomach underneath his button up shirt.

A reflection on tragedy

Yesterday, two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon.  Reports say three were killed but we still do not know many details.  My hands shake and tears form as I think back to six years ago when Seung-Hui Cho went on a shooting spree at Virginia Tech and killed 32 students.  My brother was there that day and I remember the fear of not being able to reach his cell.  When the cell networks in Boston went down, I felt for the families who could not reach their friends and family members.  Not knowing if loved ones are alright is the worst part of any tragedy.  Media coverage is going to focus on these bombings for the next few weeks and then will go back to their regular programming. Despite this national tragedy, we cannot be ignorant to tragedies abroad.
