Tanaka looks to be next great Japanese pitcher in MLB

There is quite a history of Japanese baseball players in Major League Baseball.  Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui are a few of the greats while newcomers like pitchers Koji Uehara and Yu Darvish are just beginning to make a name for themselves.  In 2014, however, there will be a new sheriff in town, and he also hails from Japan.  It will be Masahiro Tanaka. After much uncertainty regarding Tanaka’s status as a free agent, Rakuten Golden Eagles’ president Yozo Tachibana has officially posted Tanaka.

Phoenix catches fire, sprints past Mount Olive

Sophomore Autumn Carter and senior Kelsey Harris who combined for 47 points and 18 rebounds today led the Phoenix offensive attack as the Elon University women's basketball team secured a compelling 84-68 win over the Mount Olive College Trojans. The game remained close throughout the entire first half.

NFC North race remains tight entering homestretch

With just two weeks of regular season games remaining in the NFL season, many division races are just heating up.  All four divisions in the NFC have yet to be decided, and with many divisional matchups yet to be played, the couch seems like a great place to be for the next two Sundays.  Each team has faced their fair share of unforeseen circumstances this season, but none more than in the NFC North. The NFC North is used to stellar quarterback play.  Well, at least in Green Bay, Detroit and Chicago.  Behind the arms of Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford and Jay Cutler, these three teams have regularly been involved in the playoff discussion over the past few seasons.  But, this season, Rodgers and Cutler have missed significant time due to injury.  Cutler missed five games due to groin and ankle injuries while Rodgers hasn’t played since Week 9 when he suffered a broken collarbone.  Cutler returned this past week to play the Browns and led his team to a crucial 38-31 victory.  Rodgers, on the contrary, remains on the shelf for the Packers, but hopes to play this week against the Steelers, a must win for Green Bay. The biggest storyline, though, may not even be the injuries to Cutler and Rodgers, but instead the collapse of the Detroit Lions.  The Lions (7-7) have all but squandered the golden opportunity presented to them in the Cutler and Rodgers injuries, having lost four out of their last five games.

Elon residents arrested in drug investigation

Two Elon residents were arrested Tuesday in the Brookside Mobile Home Park as a part of a six-month-long joint drug investigation led by the Elon Police Department. Elon Police executed a search warrant and arrested Kionne McLaughlin, 24, and Scott Beatty, 25, both of 660 Manning Ave., Lot 9. According to a press release from the Elon Police Department, McLaughlin and Beatty are both affiliated with the "Crips" gang and are traced back to a string of residential break-ins. Elon Police recovered several stolen items including two Elon Baseball championship rings. Police also seized marijuana and drug paraphernalia from McLaughlin and Beatty.

Coach Joe Gibbs and his three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks. “Hail to the Redskins.” One of the most storied franchises in all of professional sports, the Washington Redskins, has devolved from a regional and national symbol of a unified fan base supporting a successful team into a dwindling fan base losing its passion for an on-and off-field debacle. After qualifying for the NFL playoffs eight times in an 11-year span between 1982 and 1992, the Redskins have only played meaningful January football four times since.

Freshman duo grows up fast for Phoenix

In a season defined by adjustment, opportunity and growth, two rookies have helped steady Elon women’s basketball when it mattered most. Freshman center Tamia Watkins controls the paint and freshman guard Ashanti Fox controls the pace. The rookies have combined to earn Coastal Athletic Association Rookie of the Week honors for four straight weeks, going back to Jan. 19.
